Right now they are $2,931,333 over the cap and still have to sign Yamamoto and McLeod. They do have Smith and Klefbom on LTIR so they'll likely use them to exceed the cap by $6,367,000. With the way Ken Holland hands out contracts I wouldn't be surprised to see Yamamoto and McLeod put them over though.

They also only have Skinner as a backup. That might or if you have a stud as a starter, but not with Campbell.

Not to mention they couldn't give him away for a late pick Vs. the haul Calgary got

Wow they're in cap hell. I'd love to see the NHL take a serious look at the Mike Smith LTIR situation and go nope, not gonna happen get him back on your roster.

There's just something wrong about a GM predicting that a player that played in every single playoff game for them through three rounds is going to be on LTIR in the fall when he's had no offseason surgery, no disclosed injuries outside of being "banged up". I would love to hear their medical explanation to the league in October as to why he can't play. Dear Gary; "Team doctors have come to the conclusion he's banged up and can't play". Given the exact same thing played out with Weber in Montreal it's going to be hard to stick it to the Oilers. Even with Weber Montreal disclosed he had knee, ankle, and thumb injuries over a year ago. He's still got four years left on his contract and I'm not clear exactly why these injuries are all of a sudden impossible to heal especially after a year of not playing. Once Hossa came out with the skin rash excuse it was game on for the rest of the league and it seems there's no stopping the abuse of this loophole.

The problem is that it was funny when teams were getting away with it but the Canucks were the only team that actually had to deal with the cap hit of a guy who was functionally retired, but now that the Oilers are benefiting it creates some cognitive dissonance...

I actually laughed when typing this as that too 4 is gross. But that’s how bad their d is. Maybe kulak getting hurt wouldn’t hurt but the other 3 get hurt mcdavid can’t carry that d to the playoffs
If Campbell folds with the new contract they might miss the playoffs even without injuries
Who would have thought the Flames could lose Gaudreau and they be better than the Oilers still. My buddies who were beaking right after Johnny walked sure didn’t

I would trade Whynot for him just so we could grow the Lucic/Neal trade tree.

Not that I care really, but is he an RFA or UFA after the year?

I actually don't want them to miss the playoff and have a shot at getting Bedard. I want them get in as second wild card and play the Avs and getting swept again.

Better if they just miss the playoffs. Only the bottom 10 have a shot at moving to #1.

The team, media and fan base take it as a huge win that their best goalie is getting LTIRetired. Hilarious that they managed to downgrade that position and all it took was 25 million

This is what happens when you are always trying to max out your contracts in the current year. Signing Yamamoto and Puljujarvi to 1 year deal last year was so they can add Keith and sign Hyman. Obviously they should have just stayed away from Keith but they max out their cap and completely disregarded next season
Puljujarvi gets almost triple the money
Yamamoto could get more
Both probably would have done 2 years at less than $2 mil last summer
Good old Ken Holland
