When a two year contract is signed then they both must think the same no?

They think something of him still, otherwise they wouldn’t of qualified him, like some other players they cut loose.

This is a contract offered by the Flames not a arbitrator offered contract, correct? The Flames could've let the arbitration go through and just walk away from it and let him become UFA?

I think they consider him a useful AHL player.

He is a great AHL player. They never even gave him a chance in 6 yrs. It’s possible now but very unlikely

No, they couldn't walk away because you only have walkaway rights if the arbitration award is over a certain amount. I'm not sure what that exact amount is this year because it goes up as the cap increases, but it is in the multi-millions.
Phillips was unlikely to ever get more than league minimum from the arbitrator.

With Gaudreau gone. I think Matty will get a longer look at Training Camp. Difficult to win in Playoffs with two small forwards in the lineup.

The AHL squad lost a lot of veterans over the summer. I think Phillips slots into a leadership role now.

I really hope Phillips hits it out of the park this training camp.

Me too, he’s put the work in and has become the pulse of the Heat over that time period, he’s a Calgary kid too so you really can’t pick a better story. I liked the pick when we drafted him and I’m happy to see he’s been patient and a great pro, here’s to hoping he forces some hands at camp!

With Gaudreau missing, I think Phillips may fill the void in watching a small player achieve success against the more physically gifted ones.
I always look for the smallest player on the various teams, as they usually have some special talent that the larger players don't possess.
I was really disappointed when we lost Byron. His skill, speed and tenacity really stood out, and it seemed to me to be shear idiocy to put him on waivers.
Same in the case of Martin St. Louis, who I did take steps to try and get them to keep.

I’ve been hoping Phillips would make the team since he was drafted from the royals. I personally don’t see it happening with the flames but hope he is given a legit chance somewhere else. I’m not even sure ruzika is going to be given a fair chance this year. The one thing that bothers me with the flames is they don’t want their forward prospects playing on 4th line but then they always have an abundance of middle six vet players clogging up their chance.

Yeah, after Martin St. Louis, you'd think they'd learn a lesson. Sigh. I hope this time they take a long hard look at Phillips and give him a chance.

Phillips has been a really special AHL player since he was 21. He deserves a shot more than anybody else down there.
