So Ottawa paid Toronto to take Murray? I don't get it.

I dont really get it. They sent Murray to Toronto a player with salary retention and picks for....3 magic beans?

Makes sense. The rumor initially had been Murray and 7th for 16th pick with Buffalo.

Or in the case of John Tucker, he wound up being traded for himself!
January 5, 1990 Buffalo traded John Tucker to Washington for future considerations.
July 5, 1990 Washington traded John Tucker back to Buffalo closing that trade.

Well given that Murray is an AHLer these days, that makes it a minor league deal.

I'm shocked Dubas made this move. Normally his moves turn out to be cunning. This seems like a total gamble in a position they needed someone solid. Not knowing the contract situation, I'd take a guess he's had discussions with others and there are probably other teams who have said they'll let him know at the deadline if they're going into rebuilding. Assuming Murray's contract is reasonable I'd say if another goaltender is available at the deadline and Murray is mediocre, they keep him as backup and new goaltender gets brought in then. Really shows me real goaltenders aren't available and Campbell is walking.

Did the Leafs even have the cap space for this? Strange.

Does the leafs press conference start with “Ottawa salary dumped on us and they retained and we got draft picks? Oh look and we got a starting goalie for less than $5mill?”

This trade epitomizes Ontario in a nutshell.

Cap dump for a guy who's rotated between being hurt and bad for them since they acquired him.

I guess this means that Campbell is looking for $6M+
I dunno what's worse, giving Campbell a $6M x 6year deal or having Murray at $4.68M for 2 more seasons.

... really makes me wonder why this is their solution instead of going after Husso, or Kuemper, or Fleury, or Georgiev, or Samsonov... And that's just the few moved/available recently that are better than Murray, nevermind Mrazek who probably is too, as well as the goalies from other teams at low cost...
Hell if it were me I'd rather go after Vladar and probably only have to sweeten the picks or add a prospect.

They have to have something else cooking.
They can't afford to waste a two years of peak Matthews with bad goaltending.

This is more baffling than the Oilers wasting the last three years of 29/97 with Koskinen and Smith.
At least Edmonton has the excuse that nobody wants to play there.
A 3rd and a 7th. Big bag of who cares.
