When I first started cheering for the Flames I barely knew the names of any of the players. But I knew who the trainer was. Whenever I hear the name Bearcat, the first image that pops in my mind is the white sweater with the red “FLAMES” across the chest. Man I wanted one of those so bad.

Wasn’t he a foot wear pioneer amongst trainers of some sort? Wasn’t it him that first started wearing broomball shoes or golf spikes or something for better traction on the ice?

As a kid I vividly remember running on ice/snow doing a Bearcat Murray impression for my dad. I used to do it all the time. Loved the guy.

This might be my false childhood memories speaking, but I remember that Bearcat would be among the first trainers to run onto the ice to lend a hand no matter what team the injured player was on, whether it was the Flames or their opponent, or even a referee/linesman.

It was that kind of moral character from Bearcat and his long tenure as the Flames trainer that embedded it as core value of the Flames organization. This type of culture and attitude rubs off on the players, coaches, management.

RIP, Bearcat. A truly classy human being.

I don't know if anyone's pointed this out or not... but for him to pass at 89 at least has some fitting poetry to it.

To me, he was the face of the Flames for a generation. Somehow even moreso than Lanny.

Helluva great guy too

RIP Bearcat.

Didn't he also save Eddie Beers when he swallowed his mouthguard or tongue or something?
