This is a great hire. Maurice is a solid coach.

I love this man as a coach and if Sutter wasn't here he'd be my top top top choice.

Unless the GM is refusing to fire him or something, I don't see why him quitting on the mediocre team he was coaching is commendable, or a sign of a great coach.
I don't see the appeal other than his ability to speak with charm in front of a microphone. His teams seem to go on hot streaks but I don't view him as a historical winner by any means.

Or he was burned out on them. Seems like that isn't the best locker room in the NHL. It's not like they played inspired hockey under Lowry.

I am very meh on this hire. I know Maurice is a good coach on paper, but he hasn’t had a major playoff success in a looooong time. The Panthers need someone who knows how to get it done in the playoffs. Is Paul the guy for this team? Not sure…

He will have a better roster than with the Jets and he did well with what he had in WPG for a couple years there.

Scheifele, Connor, PLD, Wheeler, Ehlers, Morrisey, Schmidt, Hellebuyck is a pretty decent roster.
And outside of Laine/PLD switch, the same core as he had for years. He really only had one year of any real success. I don’t know why people think he’s good.

IMO he's one of the more overrated coaches in the league. His career winning percentage of .490 is pretty bad for a guy that's been a head coach for as many years as he has. That aid he's going to a team stacked with talent so I imagine he should get good regular season results at least.

Feels like this is a fast track for the Panthers to head back to the middle of the pack. At best.

It will be hard for Maurice and his family to adjust from living in Winnipeg to Florida

Yeah he got them to the finals where they lost to the Red Wings but that seems a little like lighting in a bottle.

That was Laviolette. Maurice did make it to the cup final in 02 but that Red Wings team was much better.

Makes me wonder what the real reasons behind his WPG departure

I think losing Byfuglien might have been a tough blow.
Maybe he sees Ekblad as that tier of Dman.

Yeah, that year of the finals he was 35-26-16, so not a really strong record. And the year after the finals the Canes were .373. And he didn’t get fired until the next year.
His teams are often underachieving ones IMO.

Yea I'm firmly in the "wtf has Maurice really done lately?" camp
