What could go wrong? Really they can't get any worse but this is a major leap of faith. What the hell is going on in that organization?

Well...he could potentially sewer his future coaching prospects.
They should have scoured the streets of Montreal for a hobo to do this job seeing as how the only qualification appears to be "Must Speak French."

If Toffoli still wanted to be in Montreal, hopefully this changes his mind

Ducharme seemed to be a decent coach. Not sure what St. Louis can do that he can’t. Pretty surprised all in all. Sometimes management wants their own guy. Du harem got the short stick big time.

Interim head coach makes sense I guess. Give him the opportunity to show what he can do. The season is a lost cause as it is. Some pretty decent Francophones were available though, if they were interested.

It's not often a U13 AAA team loses its Assistant Coach mid-season because he got hired to be an NHL head coach.

Having been an elite player is obviously enough experience. It worked out well with Gretzky in Phoenix, right?

Definitely seems bizarre given his lack of coaching experience, but I will say that if I had to pick a recent former player that has coaching written all over him, it would be St. Louis. He seems like the type, so maybe he will do well.
Also, he has the interim label so there is no commitment. It's probably more like an audition.

Couldn’t imagine being the AHL coach of the Habs, or any other coach at really any level within the AHL, CHL, or NCAA and see someone coaching U13 hockey go straight into an NHL coaching gig. Old Boys Club is alive and well in the NHL!

More experience than Mario Tremblay had. What could go wrong?

So, his interview is essentially 3 months long then? It seems odd to make someone the interim head coach when you hire them from outside the organization.

MSL is interesting though because
1) He was a grinder before he was a star
2) He was a long term AAAA guy before he was a first liner
3) He spent a lot of time under John Tortorella
Not sure if he is up for the job but this is pretty cool

Yeah, the guy knows how to be effective in many different roles, was successful, and was a very hard worker. It's not like Phoenix when they made Gretzky the coach. St. Louis can relate to every player.

I’ve had a bit of bias against MSL ever since he was pretty open about disliking Yzerman because of the Olympics, to the point it was part of why he left TB.

St. Louis will evaluate the players as coach and then move to management after the season when a new coach will be hired.

I dont know. I dont think you're far off, but that seems really stupid. That would make the coaching move a move for its own sake.
He's not going to appreciably improve that group and I'm pretty sure anybody could 'evaluate the players.'
They probably should have just kept Ducharme, called 'er a season, drafted high and move along.

Recycled Habs coaching is the way they do like to go.
