Even if they wanted to tank they would've been better off grabbing the best assets and flipping them with retention.

Tarasenko/Johansen would've gotten big returns at 50% retained. Not to mention Bean or Nediereter.

Just an awful draft, with seemingly no plan. Not really a great way to start a franchise, with no plan, and less execution.

I would like to read a redraft based on hindsight of the assets that were flipped in the summer and the performance early in the season...

I am sure that many people could have produced either a better roster or a up and coming team...

I had thought Kylington fit the expansion draft profile to a tee. Guy with lots of speed and skill but had only shown glimpses up to that point, and hadn't had a lot of opportunity for whatever reason.

Obviously had no idea he would break out like he did, but out of the current roster, I figured he would be the one to go.

Gio wasn't a bad pick, and he definitely fills the veteran leadership need for a new locker room. That said, if they don't trade him at the deadline or otherwise re-sign him for a few more years, it will have been a poor choice in hindsight.

As long as the Flames don't reacquire Giordano at the deadline in exchange for.... Kylington.

Keep Kylington going forward.

I thought he would be perfect for an expansion team as well. He had showed a lot of potential the year before but then due to un-fortuitist circumstance, didn't get into many games last season.

Gio was the oldest player ever picked by an expansion team. It's just something that they typically don't do, so I was a little surprised when they did pick him.

I think people are judging the non-Kylington pick through a bit of closer knowledge than Seattle did (even though they had pro scouts and everything). There's a lot of promising-but-flawed prospects around and most of them don't overcome the flaws. At the time Kylington was a guy who'd dropped significantly in the draft, then hadn't cracked a Flames roster that had room at times.

I think they could've gotten a decent return if they picked up Domi but some of those guys like Voracek and Tarasenko had fat cap hits with term. Could've gotten a pick back if they took Gostisbehere but the Yotes beat them to the punch. Overall, I'd give it like a C-. There are very few players on the team now that will contribute to a winning Seattle team but at least they don't have any boat anchors

Plus is the jury really in on Kylington?

It's been a quarter of a season, and that pairing has struggled in the last half dozen games. (so has the team)

Could be a huge miss by Seattle, or they get a good haul on moving Giordano and it turns out well for them. But assuming Kylington is a top four defenseman after 27 games might be a bit premature.

I think he legit might be the worst GM in the NHL. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say he’s good?

Haven’t scanned this thread extensively though I guess.

This draft was bad at the time, has looked really bad since then and moving forward will be bad. So many brutal decisions seemingly.

I think he was seen as pretty good in Carolina. Mainly due to getting Teravainen. But he made a few bad mistakes as well.
