He is a winger currently playing center and getting caved in. Wouldn't be shocked if he was back at his normal wing position soon enough.

So true, I get people want Eichel, but people forget he is seriously injured, the risk is immensely magnified because of this. He is not worth 4 first found picks, let alone unprotected 1st round picks. Trading current roster players that have a significant role on this team, only weakens the chance of this team making this year's playoffs. Monahan, valimaki and a 2023 first round pick with conditions (ie Calgary makes the 2023 playoffs or if the don't, pick becomes a 2nd round pick.
Buffalo is the one in a bind here, don't give them what they want and

A while back in another thread I posted a study of athletes who had disk replacement surgery. The study was from 2007 and I am sure that things have changed since then. While the study concluded mostly positive results and most athletes could return to their sport, something like 8% actually had to quit due to pain and mobility issues. They also said that 30% were able to continue but had diminished output due to pain. It is also worth mentioning that the athletes were spread among several sports that were mostly non-contact sports. No hockey players were included.
So 62% of the surgeries would have been considered 100% successful, which is good, but do you bet $50 million on those odds? I stress that it was an old study and the procedures have likely improved, but I just don't think the data is there to confirm high rates of success, especially in a sport like hockey.
Also of concern is that it will be a whole calendar year that Eichel will have not played or engaged is physical practice. That could be a big problem as well. Not too many players can take a year off and regain their top form.

Makes you wonder why Buffalo said no to disc replacement surgery, maybe they have justified concerns and maybe they aren't crazy after all.

Monahan, 1st and a prospect for Eichel with a ton retained, at least 30%. He’s too much of a risk.

so you don't want him

Gary Roberts and Mario Lemieux are only ones I can think of. Spine surgery is something that has ended careers, not extend them. Not a lot of success stories, but there are some out there.

Medical science has greatly improved since the days of Roberts and Mario
If an MMA fighter can have a successful surgery so can Eichel

Rod Gilbert and Martin Hanzal did.
Outside the NHL, Peyton Manning.
