Everyone kept saying it's only $1/month, just assumed that was the normal cost. Carry on.

Back on topic, good for Mangiapane to really start getting some recognition around the league. Happy for him. His next contract is going to see a sizable increase I would bet.

What does Mangiapane's mom think of The Athletic?

You can cancel your account after the intro price / sale ends, then renew the next time there's a sale. Keeps you around $1-$2 per month. I'm personally happy to pay their full price, but you can get it cheaper if you want.

I think I found out why they're bleeding money. God, what a stupid loophole. Just close it and force people to pay a decent rate after the first month. Nobody is going to cancel accounts and renew on a monthly basis.

Plenty of people do just that with streaming services. Binge on Netflix for a month, move on. Binge on Disney, move on. It would be astounding if nobody was doing the same with the Athletic.

As Ullr said upthread, all those $10 fees add up.

If one thinks 10 bucks a month is to rich for Flames content, then i understand.

But

The Athletic covers every team...in every sport in NA....and when you add that in, think its the best value in sports......period.

Truth is we now live in a stupid twitter world where if its more than 140 characters, people lose interest. Mind bottling to me because I know for a fact, the more i read, the more i learn....about anything.

And just to add...if you pay 1$ a month for 6 and 10 more thereafter, it comes to less than 6 dollars a month, which is unbelievable value IMO.

I can’t believe how much hand wringing goes on for like 50 bucks per year or whatever for high quality sports content. It’s embarrassing

I let my Athletic subscription lapse after a few Flames writers left, but signed back on when there was a deal. The Flames coverage isn’t plentiful compared to some teams, even the Oilers, but I enjoy reading Duhatschek and Hailey Salvian. They have a lot of great NHL and team beat reporters and columnists like LeBrun, Katie Strang, Aaron Portzline, Dom L and others. With all the Eichel rumours, I’ve read a lot of John Vogl’s Sabres coverage, too.

I read almost all the general NHL content except for the Flames stuff, because we have so much of that locally already. The various ranking lists, player/coach/GM/exec polls and interviews, and fantasy articles easily make it worthwhile, and that’s just one sport. If you like the other big leagues you could never get through all the available content published daily.

The Athletic is well worth the price for hockey fans of any one team but the value gets significantly better for those who are fans of happenings around the entire league. Add in those interested in other sports and the cost of subscription is a no-brainer.

Branching out, some other subscriptions I subscribe to as I think they offer good value and am always interested in discovering new ones and supporting quality work. What are some others people subscribe to?

NHL
JFresh $54/year - the red/blue cards you see for players/teams/prospects that have taken the hockey community by storm.
HockeyViz $7/month - graphics you see less commonly than JFresh's but a larger variety of insights available.
Evolving-Hockey $54/year - Access to an array of "advanced" statistics and well-done graphics/charts. Evolving Hockey's expected goal model outperforms Natural Stat Trick's in both correlation to actual goals and area under curve so always interested in seeing their differences.
Corey Sznajder hockey $9.50/month - NHL tracking data.
Architecte Hockey $71/year - awesome databases and graphics using data from the private company, InStat, and the terrific Corey Sznajder. The owner, Bryce, will likely get scooped by an NHL team sooner rather than later so I'm enjoying this while it lasts.
Mitch Brown hockey $9.50/month - WHL/OHL/QMJHL/USHL/NCAA tracking data.
Hockey Prospecting $25/year - Access to Byron Bader's NHL prospect projection model from 30 years ago to present.

NFL
PFF NFL $40/year to $200/year (USD) - Tracking and grading for every player on every play. Unbelievable resource for NFL fans.

UFC
MMA By The Numbers $374/year - database of basic and advanced statistics for the UFC.

Soccer
Between The Posts $10-$50 (EUR) - Articles, plots, and advanced stats for numerous domestic, continental, and international leagues.

PGA
DataGolf - $190 or $270/year (USD) - Access to the PGA's ShotLink data and a variety of charts and metrics they have created.
Fantasy National - 250/year (USD) - Access to the PGA's ShotLink data in an easy-to-filter database. Further breaks metrics down by things like grass type, wind, etc.

Undoubtedly missed a couple but it's a start. Interesting in others.

No, it’s mind bottling. You know, when things are so crazy, you get your thoughts trapped, like in a bottle.

It’s actually boggling. You know, like when your thoughts get boggled. But enough people have used the other word that it is now also correct, unfortunately. Another obscure but otherwise meaningless English word slowing fading out of existence.

Does this really need to be explained? Again?

The phrase is, still is, and always was, mind boggling - everyone knows this

But in 2007, the great Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) in 'Blades of Glory' uttered the beautiful and hilarious 'mind-bottling' quote. <would include a clip but I am old and lazy>

Now, many people prefer quoting Chazz than using the original, less interesting phrase.

It may have been beautiful and hilarious the first time. It's a rancid bore the 10,000th time.
