well...united in impatience, frustration, and despair is still united at least right?

it's really not so bad being a pessimistic fanbase. at worst they'll live down to our expectations. but there's also a decent chance we'll be pleasantly surprised. isn't that preferable to the Oiler route of going in expecting Everest and winding up in Mariana Trench?

Not like I like the core or where things are going so far be it me to suggest we should have a highly ranked hope index.
I would feel more optimistic if we could finish bottom of the barrel. That would at least mean a good draft position and would likely result in trading some core pieces for further draft picks to start a proper rebuild. But that's not the Flames way, their way is either finish just outside the playoffs, or sneak in and then get bounced in round 1. All of the dejection of failure, none of the hope for a better future

I know it's already been asked and answered, but I would feel a lot better with at least one blue chip prospect in the hopper, which are almost always acquired with high draft picks (which are of course, usually acquired by being less that mediocre). And yeah, there are exceptions to the rule of course. It's possible to get homeruns with later picks, but it is not frequent enough to rely on it as a strategy for building a team.

Mediocrity is the most crippling position to be in, especially when it drains your assets just to stay there.

I know we trash Oiler fans (rightfully so) and E=NG, but sometimes I feel like that approach is the better way to go. I mean, it's sports after all. It's supposed to just be fun and a distraction. It's way more fun to be an optimist than a pessimist IMO.

Yep, the Flames are like wearing a sweater vest. Makes the torso hot and itchy, while keeping the arms uncomfortably cold.

Well I can say it is the Flames that are the source of my frustration. I don't worry much how other fans feel about the team and I can't blame any of them for being as frustrated as I am. Fan forums are a sounding board for fan complaints after all.

I'm optimistic about the season because it's more fun that way and watching hockey is pointless if it isn't for fun.

Yeah I hear ya there. To me, it's not their eternal optimism that bugs me..it's more the arrogance and looking down on us because of things that happened over 30 years ago...meanwhile ignoring what the past 20 years have looked like, and how much we've owned them this century.

It boggles my mind how they legit think they're a winning franchise people are envious of. They strut around like they're the Brady era Patriots when they've actually been the New York Jets this century. I don't get it.

EDIT: and while my expectations are low for this year, I do carry some quiet confidence just due to the Sutter Factor, paired with we have the goalie to carry us if he gets hot again. Now that we resemble more of a Sutter roster, I wouldn't be stunned to see the stars suddenly align. We'll see how she goes..

Constant Flames bashing is just stupid. Everything that happens in the league the Flames did it worse. It's amazing they aren't dead last every season...or ever

Where are the Coyotes on this list?

We may literally play in a building that was built in the 60's next season IF WE'RE LUCKY

I'll be honest. I'm not very excited at all about the coming Flames season but if they had a horrific start over the first two months that put them in the bottom 3 of the standings I would get a lot more excited as it would mean a management change in the horizon as well as the high draft pick this organization so dearly needs. As well if they got off to an amazing start I would also be much more excited of course. Basically any direction north or south of spinning their wheels in mediocrity is what I'm hoping for. Finishing 9-10 in the conference or finishing 7th or 8th and getting bounced in the first round is worst case scenario.

I'd say I'm always optimistic at the beginning of seasons, as I tend to hope for the best every season. You never know, sometimes things just click and the Flames go an a tear. I never saw Flames finishing 2nd overall a few years ago. Maybe this year, a Sutter led team makes it far in the playoffs. If it doesn't happen, there's always a next season.

Looking at the division this year, other than Vegas, Flames can finish anywhere from 2nd to 5th or 6th. Let the games begin!

Coyotes:

don't have a building
suck EVERY year
trade their good players away because they can't afford them
traded ALL their good players away this year
play to an empty building
don't make a sound when their team falls in a forest

And even their fans are more optimistic than Flames fans

Article: Fan Sentiment

Fans: "sounds about right"

Well yeah, the article is literally a reflection of how fans feel.

If only we could be so lucky...then perhaps ownership and management could see what the Flames truly need is a proper rebuild.

Can't have negative fans if they don't have any fans.

Actually, that's it exactly. Disgruntled Coyote fans give up and move on. As Canadians, Flames fans do not have that option available to them.
