Had to bump this thread. This is literally ridiculous...

I always knew his contract was going to be an absolute steal, but my god it's worth like 1/3 of what it actually should be.

Shesterkin is statistically having one of the best seasons EVER by a goaltender.

In 37 games:
- 1st in SV% (.942 - Husso is second at .930)
- 1st in GAA (1.93 - Swayman is second at 2.03)
- 1st in GSAA (39.99 - Andersen is second at 21.67 )
- 1st in GSAA/60 (1.10 - Husso is second at .68 )
- 1st in HDSS (.886 - Husso is second at .864)

Shesterkin has literally been almost twice as good as the second best goalie in the NHL this season. His contract is an absolute joke and is BAR NONE the best contract in the NHL (sorry Lindholm).

He's literally saving over a goal a game. That is UNHEARD of.

For context, even if you add up the GSAA of Vasilevskiy's last 2 seasons (35.8 in 84 games), it still doesn't even come close to comparing to what Shesterkin has done in 37 games. It's almost laughable how unbelievable that is.

There should be no debate whatsoever who the MVP is this season. It'll probably go to a forward like usual, but that would make for one of the biggest snubs ever. Without Shesterkin, the Rangers are on the outside looking in.

As of right now, we are witnessing one of the greatest goaltending performances in NHL history, and that's not even being the least bit exaggerating.
His stats would be even more ridiculous if the Flames hadn't lit him up twice.

Calgary played the Rangers twice this year and have scored nearly 16% of the goals Shesterkin has allowed all year.

EDIT: excluding the Flames games, his save percentage goes to .948 and his GAA drops to 1.72.

He’s also so much fun to watch. He’s incredible. Best goalie in the league, no question.

Yeah, under the strict wording, who else is more valuable to their team? McDavid has Draisaitl, Gaudreau has Lindholm and Tkachuk, Mackinnon has Makar and Rantanen, Huberdeau has Barkov and everyone else on that deep team.

I'm not speaking out against Shesterkin, but I suppose to be fair he has teammates that could win the Richard and Norris trophies (both unlikely, but definitely in the running and either way the defending Norris winner)

The Hart trophy is almost never interpreted this way. At best "most valuable to his team" is used as a tiebreaker between close candidates.

Otherwise, this award would almost always go to a goalie on a team that no one expected to make the playoffs.

Now trade Georgiev to the Oilers for their 1st only to watch his career hit the biggest of speed wobbles as he also isn’t the answer.

It is kind of crazy how good Russia's goaltending is with Shesterkin and Vasilevskiy. You could make a really strong argument that these are the two best goalies in the league. (obviously a small sample size for Shesterkin)

The value on this contract is unreal for the rangers.

I'm surprised at the negative reaction(s) to this one.

Shesterkin, IMO, is already a top 5 goalie in the game at worst. If you watch him, you'll realize he's pretty much the complete package outside of size.

Puck reads are off the charts, ridiculous mobility/flexibility, extremely high effort levels, and is an incredibly smart goalie.

I have concerns about his play style combined with ability to stay healthy (i.e. groin/hips). But at four years, it's fine. This is a no-brainer deal.

Oh, I’m well aware of that. It’s usually just MOP in disguise. And it’s always hard to argue against a great goalie being the most valuable to his team. There’s a bias against goalies though, probably because they have their own award.

I think some posters are not realizing that this contract was signed last summer and that this thread has been bumped...

The negative reactions were made over the summer when the contract was announced. I would imagine most of those posters may have changed their tune today. It was a little risky based on the small sample size but it's pretty clear the Rangers knew what they had with this guy as it now looks like a great contract.

You could make an argument that MVP doesn't specify relative vs. absolute value, and that it tends to be awarded based on the latter.

Kevin Woodley was talking about this last year on one of his regular appearances on the Fan and wrote a piece last year on Shesterkin's unique ability to move around his crease after already having gone down.

The way Shesterkin moves on that play and in the morning skate video allows him to stay connected throughout. Whereas a traditional butterfly push can create extra motion to gather the push skate and power across, often with the upper body and arms twisting away from the direction the goalie is moving as a counterbalance, Shesterkin is able to keep his torso upright, his hands active and engaged in front of him when he moves.

Oh god, LOL. I didn't see that... I didn't even know he re-signed. Fair enough.

1) it was an RFA contract
2) it's been half a season

Shesterkin has been incredible this year, but let's keep the hyperbole under control

Good chance that this will be a steal of a deal, but how often have we seen goalies have one great season to become average or below average in the future? You see it a lot with goalies. I just don't get this feeling with this goalie but hopefully I'm wrong. F the Rangers.
