Zadorov probably trying to get 4.5, Flames trying for 3.5. will settle at 4.

This is not a guy the Flames, or any team for that matter, should be signing for 6 years.

He hasn't shown any improvement. If he does then great, fine, pay the man then. Then being the operative word.

Not sure about that one.

A guy like Rasmus Andersson, for instance, is only 24. Would anyone around here stand to think he will be a vastly different player from what he is now in 2 seasons? I'd say not. And if he did suddenly start piling on the 15g 40a seasons by then it would be a major outlier.

It's not to take away from anyone in any way, but aside from Giordano (who was a late bloomer to begin with), I can't think of too many D that suddenly morph into something they weren't in their late 20's.

For me, Zadorov is a good 5/6 guy and pretty average to below average 3/4 guy. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but hopefully the team isn't betting on a 5+ year deal for him to show it.

re Andersson: yes, I think it is not only possible, but very likely, that he will be a more complete defenseman in a couple years than he was last year. And you bring up points - I am talking defensively, his all-around game.

You bring up Giordano as an exception, but he isn't really. And his partner - Brodie - is yet another example. As a 24 year old in the 14/15 season, he was NOT the player that he was in 18/19 season (as a 28 YO) when he and Giordano were a top pairing, and a damn good one.

Defensemen typically put it all together much later than forwards. This isn't news and I am not sure why we have to debate it

My guesses for possible contracts for Zadorov:
Arbitration: $3.75M x 1 year
3 years: $3.85M x 3 years

4 years: $4.2M x 4 years
5 years: $4.02 x 5 years - the Regehr contract.

I'm betting we'll all be surprised at the dollars & term.

Something like 6 years at $4.5M

I don't see a long term deal like 6 years, personally. I would think the Flames would like to have a year of him in the organization first. I think a 1 or 2 year deal makes the most sense.

Based on the price they paid for him 3rd rounder, his market value is not worth anything close to a long term deal unless it’s heavily discounted

My bet is 1 yr at what ever fair is, probably 3.5-4M
Longer term if it is 3.5 or less

4 seems absurd but so does 6+....pretty easy middle ground on this one.

3 X 5.25....seems simple...no?

I read that Minnesota's had an offer to Fiala that was 5+, they obviously know how arbitration goes in the NHL and intentionally put their last offer in as a low ball

I'm sorry but a contract like this would be absolutely absurd for this player. It immediately becomes the worst contract on the team.

I’m not sure what it will be, but I am looking forward to watching him be big and nasty in front of our net next year. We’ve been missing this element for so long.

His previous teams have been very disappointed in his play, and Seattle passed on him also.

He was fine when he was cheap, but with UFA around the corner, his value has gone down.

That “big and nasty” comes with a price; he simply isn’t that good.

I dont believe that to be true waht so ever.

He was the main piece in the Saad trade to Colorado and was traded this year to make room for Seth Jones and his bazillion dollar deal.

He isnt a great top 2 dman, but he is just fine on a 2nd pairing.

Are you kidding? Brodie had a career year in 2014/15 He was top pairing d-man with Engelland. He played 27 freaking minutes a game in the last playoff series the Flames actual won. Gio got injured and Brodie stepped up and played better.

He was easily one of the top-4/5 skating d-men in the league. After 2014/15 Brodie was firmly establish as a top-4 d-man on any team in the league and he has maintained that through today.

I actually agree with you on this, I think the Flames missed Brodie more last season than they will miss Gio next season. Brodie was the player who made Gio amazing, because his speed allowed Gio to pinch and take risks, knowing that Brodie could get back to cover for him. I know Gio had the most points on the D last season, but he also had the most PP time of any defenseman. Someone else will end up with those minutes, and that will boost their numbers. The only question is whether it will be Andersson, Hanifin, or Valimaki. One of them will get significantly more minutes than they have in the past, and may be more productive in those minutes than Gio would have been had he not been drafted by Seattle. Only time will tell. And time is a cruel master.

With the Zadorov signing the only player still on the arbitration docket is Sanheim
