Agreed. I’m with Old Dutch

I can’t believe the Isles wouldn’t even take back Future Considerations from the Coyotes

Seems like a massive overpay just to get rid of $11 million in cap space over the next two seasons. To me this signifies the the Islanders think they are close and are going for it. I would expect to see some UFA signings and/or other trades.

Why does NY care if he plays in Arizona?

Because if he doesn't play for the Coyotes they don't have to fork out as many draft picks as per the conditions of the trade. As Scorp said the Coyotes have incentive to play him no matter how bad he is if they really want to recoup the 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.

It is essentially a condition which takes care of retirement or career ending injury leading into the final year of his contract.

If he retires his cap hit and salary are no longer of burden to the Coyotes so they get less in the trade.

If he has a career ending injury insurance will likely pay out most of what is still owed to him and the Coyotes can use LTIR so less of a burden to the Coyotes as well so they get less in the trade.

The condition on the 3rd is just a way of saying that if Ladd actually attempts to play the final year of his contract, the Coyotes will get extra compensation. If he doesn't, they just get two 2nd round picks.
