Yup, she called the last game before the covid shutdown.

Yup....her and Cassie and Caroline Cameron IIRC.

Leah is a tremendous in studio personality and speaks to what she sees, which is somewhat a rarity at times these days.

But as a PBP caller....yeesh. Now I only heard that one game but is was really really rough.

Has she been working somewhere the last couple years doing pbp? Maybe junior or college or something?

I am going to agree with you on that. I would not want her as a play by play caller. Watching the Vegas flames game made my ears bleed. However, 100 percent on the in studio personality, is where she excels.

From my understanding she has very little experience as a pbp. I recall her stating that even before the Flames allowed her to call the Vegas game, what she would do is do play by play and record it while watching the game at home.

As much as I have disdain for Cassie in the colour role, and believe she should only be on the panel as well. There is no way Leah should ever be a colour commentator. That should be respected for people who have played pro hockey with the ability to analyze and have a voice. Yes, Loubo never played, but he is a rarity.

Leah is not colour though, she's play-by-play like Ball and Chris Cuthbert.

It's interesting that they got her calling games with little experience, but I wonder if the games she does do, is going to be primarily calling the ESPN+ games which aren't on TV? If they bring back Gary Throne, he will be the main voice that people will hear majority of the times.

I believe the story is that she would attend Manitoba Moose games in her off-time and practice her skills using a recorder. Mike Emrick, who had the same method when he was coming up, predicted she would be the first female PBP person in the NHL.

If Doc's her mentor and supporter I think she'll be just fine. She clearly has impressive knowledge of the game already.

I believe he retired but not completely sure. I know he got canned just before this baseball season by the Orioles who blamed covid for it.

Great pbp guy though but has to be getting up there in age.

I agree with this, and I really like her, but it takes years to not just do what these guys do, but do it in a way that sounds natural. She's not quite there yet, unfortunately.

I mean, it doesn't matter what I think, obviously, but in all honesty she should be calling AHL games for the next 3-5 years. Then once she has her voice, maybe a year or two doing regional NHL games just to get used to the speed... then a national gig.

He has indicated interest in taking back the job.

The NHL's new landmark broadcast and streaming agreement with ESPN has caught the attention of Gary Thorne.

The legendary announcer and former voice of the NHL on ESPN said he would be interested in returning to the booth to call hockey games.

"I'd love to talk to them about it," Thorne told The Athletic's Richard Deitsch.

He added: "I'd love to talk about it with ESPN and see what direction they're going to take with it, what the schedule is going to look like, all of that. But from the primary foundational question of, 'Is that something that interests me?' Yes, it does."

I will say the best crew ever never had a former player on it, Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin Jr. I find most color guys now either talk too much or tell stories about when they played in 1980.

Irvin probably had more stories than your typical player, having basically grown up as a member of the Habs, from assistant to the equipment manager to their media operations, with his dad as the coach. But he also got a BComm from McGill, so basically a well educated hockey guy with a bunch of media experience.
