I'm very interested and hopeful that Sutter will have an impact, but lets not assume that the team was playing as Geoff Ward was directing.

Don't think a modern NHL coach would ask his team to play slow, to turn pucks over in low percentage risk situations, or to pinch without support for example.

They may not have been scared enough of the guy to be on their toes, which makes the group weak, and a stronger hand needed, but Ward wasn't necessarily the whole problem.

Well that has to rattle a bunch of people.

But I thought the system was the problem?

^^ Nope, just part of it. Its very apparent there is a lot to fix and maybe (probably) too much to accomplish in half a shortened season. Still excited to see what he can correct and who responds and how.

I wish they made the change when most people knew it was needed, at least a month ago. I figure they will need to win 2/3s of the remaining games to get in the playoffs. Here's hoping!

You can say the system is right, but if you also say the style isn't, that makes you fundamentally question how much the system will change.

If the Flames are quicker to reset and get the pick up the ice, or closing gaps quicker in the neutral zone, that is a fundamental change.

I don't think we're ready for 'I told you so' just yet.

At least they did it. Not like when it was brutally clear that Gulutzan was useless and let him run out the entire season.

I agree. Ward was a problem. The players are a problem. Ward wasn't going to fix the problem with the players. Sutter can fix many of the problems on the ice and the GM can make changes to the problems that won't be solved here.

People put way too much emphasis on systems.

Darryl Sutter is not effective everywhere he goes because of a system.

Systems are what coaches who don’t know what they’re doing use to confuse the public into thinking they’re up to the job.

See Gulutzan, Glen.

This has been the Flames for a long time. Not stepping towards a puck and waiting for it to come to them, not closing gaps to opposition players... I don't know if there is any support for puck carriers leaving the zone, because that kind of play has not happened this year.

As for the lines, remember he likes to use pairs. I don’t think he’ll split up 13-23

Why not?

Why has Lindholm been given every chance to play centre oath Tkachuk but not Gaudreau?

Why has Backlund never seen significant time with Johnny?

I think Tkachuk would help Monahan a ton. Monahan isn’t a product of Gaudreau, but he does defer to him way too often.

Nothing is off the table right now.

So in other words it was in fact a coaching issue. Motivating the team is probably the most important part of the job today dealing with millionaire players. No need to sugar coat things as Ward was a nice guy but a horrible NHL head coach that couldn't last a full season before being fired. It is what it is.

I was surprised to see Lindholm with Gaudreau in OT against the Senators.

I think that needs a further look. Will not be surprised if it is tried out by Sutter at some point, especially since Lindholm does fit the mould of a two way player.

Tkachuk and Monahan as a pair may not be fast enough.

Having two "slower" players on the same line may not be the best idea.
