I thought a team can't bank space when they're above the cap and using LTIR for relief as the Oilers currently are.

Whereas with the Ryan situation before he got injured, we weren't above the cap.

Edit: sorry, this is exactly the same point that Robbob is making. Ignore my post.

It isn't for cap savings.

The Oilers are over the cap due to LTIR. Putting Neal on waivers does absolutely nothing for thier cap situation.

To those saying it’s to allow him to go to taxi squad, I think that’s true. But point is the metaphorical open hand slap across his smarmy face that waivers represents. And no one will take him.

Sure it is, there is a reason Flames sent Ryan to the Taxi Squad after every game.

It may not help with their LTIR cap issues.

However the move is a cap saving technique.

Then it's mostly like to get his negative attitude away from the main squad.

Flames still need a goal scoring RW, Lucic back to the Oilers for Neal (25% retained) and a 1st round pick?

Slight difference in that Ryan was sent back and forth and played games up until his injury, wasn't "The Real Deal" scratched recently (as mentioned in this thread).

A team cannot bank any cap space when drawing LTIR overages. How do you imagine that the Oilers are saving cap space with this?

Yep, Oilers will do the same thing....

I bet he is sent down then recalled after every game...

He has 2 years left after this season, Oilers have to find a way to make it work....

Not surprised he was scratched....

No.

The Flames are under the cap, so the savings from Ryan was real.

When you are over the cap due to an LTIR contract, (but under the cap otherwise) you don't accrue any savings. reducing the non-LTIR number accomplishes nothing.

There is no savings.

It's amazing how he was able to fool everyone for years to have us think he was a decent hockey player. Doesn't even matter what happens to his career from here out. He already won.

Again, Neal has been a healthy scratch recently. How does that save money?

Neal only played 9 games this season.

They must be calling up Benson, Marody or another filler from the AHL for the main roster.

Quit the team? Did he start? Will he be able to tell the difference?

From an article on Oilers nation

"Edmonton more roster flexibility, as Neal will freely be able to go up and down from the Oilers to the Taxi Squad once he clears.

Having Neal on the Taxi Squad as a buried contract will also save the Oilers $1,075,000 against his cap hit"

Well the article is wrong.

The first part is correct, he can freely move up and down from the taxi squad.

As for the $1,075,000, that is what they would save, if they were under the cap. However, they are not, and do not.
