As little interest as I have in seeing Hamonic back on defense for this club, I much prefer signing him to a cheap contract than another waste of assets at the deadline.

But if Hamonic was reluctant to play in the bubble over health concerns, the regular season going to be way worse.

Maybe Hamonic continues to opt out of playing for now, but closer to the deadline they activate him (presumably in the post-vaccine period).

How many players want to spend the entire winter in Canada without being allowed to leave? I doubt many free agents with options sign in Canada

Hamonic in for Forbort sure would have been nice. I doubt he'd look as lost on that 30 sec left game winner by Oleksiak.
Still was a good option for the bottom pair IMO, and all it cost WPG was 1Y 1M.

Hard NO!

I'm as sentimental as the next guy and yes he was a warrior BUT....how does he help this team?

Its time to inject our young and up and comers into the lineup.

Please stop with the GD reclamation projects, momentary feel good moments and pipe dreams lollipops and rainbows ....let's have a team with players who have something more to offer than rode hard and put away wet.

Thanks Travis for your time here.

If he returns it better be in the 7/8 spot.

I wonder if Tre is doing him a solid and "offering him a contract" so that Hamonic can go back to Vancouver and say "Look, Calgary is interested in bringing me back for this much, I need more from you to make this work".
... then it gets too pricey for Dim Jim but he keeps "upping the price on Tre" and then Hamonic signs in Vancouver for double the amount that he would have received before Tre started upping the price of Hamonic.

Win/win for Flames fans and Hamonic!

It was from TSN Radio in Vancouver, but it appears to have been deleted

Maybe we're just bidding Vancouver up to mess with them a little more after everything else this offseason.

I mean is it really surprising that the three western canadian teams are interested in a depth NHL veteran defenceman for rock bottom prices?

I think it was 'The Moj' from TSN 1040 Vancouver radio who has since deleted his tweet. For those that didn't see it, he claimed that both Calgary and Vancouver were in the mix for Hamonic.

At the beginning of last season the Flames were actually trying to talk extension with him. May have dodged a bullet there as I imagine early last season the numbers they were offering were considerably higher than anything Hamonic has seen since the beginning of free agency.

Even if we did sign him and it would have to be for no more than near league minimum, he won't be opting to play until late 2021 if the safety of his family is his primary concern.

I respect a hard nosed vet that is willing to go into the corners but we simply have better options with more gas in the tank at this point. I have trouble believing he would be able to step in and play at a high level when/if he was ready.

Can we do a similar F over job to Edmonton next offseason? That would be great.

Like bidding to price RNH out of their means, etc..

Once again I’m shocked by these types of responses.

It has nothing to do with being sentimental. How does it help the team you ask?

- Cheap depth for when we inevitably run into injuries. Hamonic is a better option than Yelesin and Petrovic.

- Saves us from dealing a mid range pick at the deadline for a Forbort/Fantenberg type.

- Roster size is likely to be expanded this year. View signing Hamonic to a cheap 1 year as an early deadline pick up. Given the border situation depth trades will be hard to come by.

- Can solidify the PK and provide some toughness for certain games when needed.

- Not a bad guy to have mentoring some of our young defenseman.

We won’t be signing Hamonic to play significant top 4 minutes, but to add him as a bottom pairing/press box insurance policy?

It’s a shrewd move in my opinion.

Hanifin was a completely different player once he got away from Hamonic.

If it does happen I don't want Valimaki stapled to him all season long.

I'd like to see then

Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Gio - Hamonic

With Gio getting plenty of powerplay time while Hamonic can eat up PK minutes.

Yes without knowing the intricacies it's probably unwise to speculate but I like Kylington. I want that skating ability in the lineup.

A Valimaki - Kylington pairing reminds of a Gio - Brodie 2.0 but Kylington needs to get unleashed: he also needs to trust his (matured) instincts, which only comes if the coaches don't hammer him for errors.

I also like Hamonic- a true heart and soul guy who played quite well in the 107 pt season.

One would think there are a lot of factors at play (your mention of return to play terms) and things like style of play. I hope Kylington is in the plans.

In the rest of my post I talk about how Hamonic wouldn’t be an every game player though.

I view him as the 7 guy- coming in for injuries or for when Kylington/Nesterov run into a slump.
