Whoever picks him up is going to gain immediate benefit. Johnson is a really good player and give opportunity will produce.

His contract is terrible value for what he brings. $5MM for 4 more years for a 0.5 point per game player?

If he stays healthy, I bet he'll be a 55-65pt player elsewhere in an expanded role. Got a really tough draw in Tampa where guys like Point and Cirelli just kept on emerging (not to mention Stamkos was still there).
In their 2015 run, I'd argue Tyler Johnson was their best player, and everything we wish Sean Monahan could be.

I haven't looked, but i bet his minutes played especially on power play, o-zone starts, etc have declined over last few years as Point and Kuch have taken that time away.

I'm shocked that another team hasn't made a deal for something for Johnson. At a free price (aside from his salary), why wouldn't every single team put a claim? I'd want him on the second line for the Flames, undersized or not.

Why?
4 more years at 5 mil per annum and he’s pretty beat up.

Expose him in expansion draft so he basically is...
1 year @ $5mm
50-60 points
Right shot RW or C

He has an NTC and apparently refused every offer that came in.
Now, for free, sure. But if he already rejected a trade to you, now you have a guy who doesn’t want to be on your team, for $5M. YOu can probably trade him next year if it doesn’t work, but you might end up retaining salary to do so.

Hot take alert: I’d prefer him to Hall at 7x$8M+

I hope we put in a claim. Could easily give us a few new looks in the mid 6. Heck I wouldn't mind swinging a trade if it comes down to it, waiver players usually only cost about a 4th round pick

Will his NTC be a problem for the expansion draft?

He couldn't produce AND was a minus player on Tampa during the playoffs.
Stay far away unless they retain half the salary.

Johnson with 50% retained has gotta be worth something. Gotta be better than a four year buyout scenario...

Is tampa actually going to buy him out if he clears? Or just bury him in the minors?

Burying him in the minors only provides the Lightning with $1.075 mil in cap relief.
If TJ can force Tampa to buy him out it is in his best interest.
A buyout will pay TJ $11.833 mil of the $17.75 mil owed to him. He can probably sign another contract worth more than the $5.9 mil he will lose and at a cap friendlier cap hit on a team he prefers.

Isn’t the buyout window closed?

There is a second one that opens if teams have salary arbitration

Including non-roster guys (because I don’t see any current roster guys that have arb rights).

If he clears, he probably waives his NTC and Tampa can work out a deal with a team that wants to send a contract back. Or Tampa throws in a sweetener for someone to take him.
