Thought I'd post a follow up. This story appeared in a 1995 game program. Gives a little more detail to go with the interview.

Spoiler for size.

Thanks for posting.

Man, the justification for switching to black (all of page 4’s tripe) sounded as desperate and pathetic in trying to convince themselves then, as it does now.

Pants would be washed if they were red or black.

Trotting out cherry picked academic studies and then backup that up by saying the 1978 Canucks and 1980 Pens gained 7 spots in league penalty minutes when going to black? Comical.

Plain and simple, it was BFSB because of lazy design, moving away from tradition for no real reason other then and a marketing team which had no other ideas. Claiming being progressive and all the other BS and the bottom of the second column on the page, while in another breath reminding everyone that it’s ok because other teams are also black means the Flames are in good company, is more double speak and contradiction.

Thanks, everyone for posting these links and scans. This is the very reason for reading Calgarypuck.

When the pedesdal jersies were released, it was at the start of a work-stoppage season. I remember seeing them in a newspaper clipping, dressed on a mannequin. No hockey was being played.

I was horrified with the look, and could't believe they would use them. Didn't they already have a uniform?

They started with a wimper and never got better.

Scars fade. The team has been terrible in other uniforms as well.

Every time I see the pedestal jerseys I cringe, I just can't tell if it's the ugly jersey or just the horrible memories of how awful the team was in that era. I still remember trying to convince myself that Val Bure and Freddy Braithwaite were star Hockey players...dark times
