Yeah it seems to be missing on people that Hanifin is as young as some of our prospects that haven't cracked the league yet. Would be awkward if those writing off Hanifin are also defenders of Bennett's due to his 'youth'.

A friend of mine plays for Cavalry FC and tore his ACL + had surgery. He told me he's out 9 months or so
Valimaki's time frame will be similar. 8 months puts us into right into the first week of the playoffs, more than likely out for the entire regular season +

Draft Pick

I know the draft isn't till 2021, but he now looses a full year of eligibility. Maybe we don't need to protect him anymore?

That sucks all-around, for him, the team and us fans. Really too bad.
Never had an ACL injury. Is recovery time helped by his young age?

took me 8 months to get back, and I'm lazy and wasn't good in good shape to start with, and didn't rehab that much. I think 6 months is a decent timeline, and as long as its just ACL and not meniscus tear or anything, physio can start basically right away.

Maybe now the Flames can capitalize and trade Brodie to the Flames to cover for the injury.

Of course it will, it's just a matter of how much. There's a graveyard of prospects that have missed substantial development time to injuries and bunch more that still turned into good players but probably would have been stars.
This is not good at all after missing significant time during his first NHL season.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Yeah even of the recovery time is around 6 months he'll have missed out on pre-season, regular season, so much playing time and preparation.
Maybe back for the playoffs?
Elite athlete and blue chip talent though so maybe he can drop right in without a hitch when he is back.
Still, awful news.
Good news (I guess) is that Kylington looked so good last year when called upon to replace Valimaki

Flames will still need to retain salary.

I believe you're correct. If he misses the full season and doesn't play again until 2020-21, he would only have two years experience going into the draft and shouldn't need to be protected. That's still a long way away though. If he can recover in 6 months, he'd be back before the trade deadline.

Torn ACL recovery is how many months typically?
Any chance he could be back for the trade deadline??

Ugh, man that sucks. Here's hoping for a 100% recovery. Definitely nervous that it's a knee issue, as those aren't always the easiest to ever get back to 100% from.

While you can’t take any positives from this, it is comforting to have Brodie still in the mix. Really unfortunate for his development and hopefully he’s a quick healer.

My guess is that if/ when Valimaki reutrns he will be in the AHL bringing his game back up to speed.

Brutal news. Hopefully his recovery goes smoothly.
For a little bit of optimism, apparently ACL surgery has come a long way in the last few decades and a lot of players do make a full recovery.

Of all positions in all sports, I'd have to imagine an NFL running back would the hardest to recover from an injury like that. So if Adrian Peterson can rush for 2000 yards the season after tearing his ACL, IMO that bodes well.

Sure, but from a logistical standpoint, the Flames currently have three AHL goalies and only two nets for them. Putting Parsons back in the ECHL would be ill-advised IMO and Gillies cannot go to the E without his consent. Gillies is going to be 26 soon and at a certain point, they're going to have to cut ties, especially if he continuess having bad seasons.
