Imagine a world where 4 of the terrible Pacific division teams made it this year. Finish to the season would be a snoozefest with Arizona making it in handily.

The huge appetite for the 1 vs 8 system again is just closet Leafs fans wanting to see them dance their way around getting ejected annually by Boston or Tampa.

I don't know if it's so set that wild card is staying. I feel like the current playoff format was set up for a 32 team league, and it would be 1-4 in each division making the playoffs. The wild card was just a placeholder until 32 teams was in place, which is the case now with Seattle joining.

The fact that it's D1 vs VC & D2 vs D3 means they want divisional opponents to face each other in the playoffs.
