I think this would be bad for hockey. You want to encourage GMs to do crazy things at the trade deadline, it makes the whole league more fun to follow. If they miss the playoffs, you're just going to see more conservative "don't rock the boat" thinking.
I'm rooting for Columbus and Carolina, and for Columbus to win a couple of rounds. This timeline would also have the benefit of a bunch of Tortorella quotes.

I, for one, am happy to see Montreal lose all of their remaining games; even tonight’s against the pathetic Winnipeg Jets.

I don't want them to make the playoff neither, but, seeing them beat the Jets (given some pundits said will be at the SC final) is very enjoyable and that will clinch the Western Conference for us, will make me very happy.

Flames specific wantings override everything. Go Habs and Knights.

Meh. The Flames have a 9-point lead on the Jets. if they win this game it will have no affect whatsoever on Calgary's season.

You mean aside from completing phase 1 of 2 to lock up the west without playing for it in SJ tomorrow? It has an effect if the Habs win tonight.
I for one would much rather the Flames have it all locked up tonight so they can avoid some potential D-Baggery by SJ tomorrow.

I want the Flames to rest ASAP. Lock things up tonight and start planning for round 1, making every decision that's best for that.

I like the Bruins and the Flames and I would much prefer they take the measured approach to building a team - but that doesn't mean I don't live in the world of short attention spans where I get excited when the B's are rumoured for Mark Stone. If Columbus goes all in, see's some result because of it, then other teams mimic it - my trade deadline day next year will be that more exciting.

I really honestly font find the trade deadline fun.
It's more grating than anything. Fans say goodbye to players they love, teams get stripped to crap, players who helped push their team into playoff competition get rewarded by being pushed out of the roster by incoming players or traded to losing teams on the other side of the continent, and most of the time it doesn't affect things much.
Sure, Mark Stone was interesting, but he's a star player and wasn't a rental. He's the exception, not the rule.
Trades are fine when it's about the longterm. Teams loading up on rentals for a playoff push IMO just sucks, and if there was any reasonable way to ban it, I'd like that. (There isn't.)
I'm glad the trade deadline is quieter than it used to be, and I would be glad if Columbus becomes an example that you should not bet big on mercenaries at the trade deadline.

Thanks to Ducay for starting this thread. It's the final week of the regular season so let's follow the eastern conf standings. The Lightning won't be on the list since they clinched a playoff spot quite a while ago along with 1st in their div, conf, and the overall standings.

With tonights results (CBJ loss, MTL/CAR wins) things are back to being TOIGHT AS A TOIGAH with CBJ dropping down into the TBL guillotine.
Gonna be some kinda finish here to the season. Thur/Fri/Sat will be some intense hockey. I like where the teams are now, CBJ has a chance to give TBL a challenge, and Habs fans don't even deserve 4 playoff games, even if it meant TBL dissecting them.

I’m good with the idea of CBJ missing it. I like the Hurricanes and their former Flames and I have never had an issue with the Habs.
As for not inspiring future GM’s to go for it at the deadline? I’m fine with that. The idea of teams tanking and selling off their good players has never been that appealing. I’d have the deadline much earlier in the season.

The Penguins are still part of this wild card race. They can finish in ninth place or second place in their division, just like their division rivals, the Hurricanes and BJs.

This is amazing, only three teams have solidified their placing. It may be until Saturday where we find out where they finish.

Something crazy, its possible the central division winners point total wouldnt be enough to get in the playoffs in the eastern conference.
