The Isles drafted Tavares, he didn't pick them.
He have them 9 years. They should be thankful he stuck around that long.

That's all good and well, no problem with a guy leaving like that. Just don't tell them you're going to stay right before you leave

Did Roy get boo'ed when he returned to Montreal, or did everyone blame Tremblay?

Scoreboard the story (Habs management at that time was seen as atrocious as the Oilers today)

I'd be booing if this happened to the Flames. If you know you're gonna leave, let the team trade you.
Pretty unneccessary to screw them over like he did.

yup... if Jarome left Calgary and joined the Oilers in his prime, asking calgary not to trade him and that he was going to sign but then pulled the switcheroo, i am sure a lot of fans would be just as angry...

Thought what the Islanders fans did today was glorious with the exception of throwing things at him. You never see that kind of energy and passion in a regular season game so kudos to the Isle faithful.
Tavares has every right to leave but it's the way he left which drove fans insane and left them extremely bitter.

He didn't screw them over.
He exercised his negotiated rights as a professional.
If anything they screwed him over. He gave them a sweetheart second contract in a cap era to build a team around and they repeatedly farted it away.
That contract is a perfect example of why McDavid wasn't about to give the Clown College running the Oilers anything close to a Tavaras bargain for them to squander.

By excersising those rights in the way he did he also simultaneously stabbed every single Islanders fan in the back and set the whole franchise back in the process. Team management might not have a reason to boo him, which they didn't do, instead they put together a nice tribute for him, so that's all well and good. I agree whole heartedly with the fans on this one though, and hope they get lots and lots of chances of booing and jeering him for as long as they see fit while their team knocks his team to the curb both during regular season and the playoffs. The Islanders being so good and destroying the Leafs repeatedly is such sweet poetic justice.

Hard situation for him, but he probably should have just given them the a-ok to trade him and get a great collection of picks/prospects back.

Well, the 2 teams did reciprocate free agents. Komarov has been doing okay with the Isles.

NYI got played, but they are partially to blame too...
I love the guys in Calgary, but there is zero chance I'd let Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Monny/Lindholm walk away for nothing on July 1st. They'd be gone the 3 week of June if they aren't signed
|
Trading a players rights after the season and just before UFA gets you very little.
Players can talk to multiple teams for about a week prior to UFA, so it’s not like previous times when July 1 was the first time anyone could talk to UFA’s.

Sometimes I think the fans think the players "owe" them a bit too much. It's a business after all. The players are employees and make money, the owners make even more money, etc.
Although, makes for a cool playoff like atmosphere! haha
|
Even though this is basically correct, let's be realistic now.
Fans/customers aren't going to sit around and think, "oh well, it's all good. It's a business, after all. I don't care that my favourite team is weaker or that my favourite player left. It's a business, and business comes first!"

I fully understand the Isles fans, good on them. They aren't booing him for leaving, but for stringing them along ... if he had told them earlier so that they could have traded him at the TDL, it would be different. Just look at Hamonic, they still love him.
great result too, happy for the Isles. And poor Tavares won't be scarred by one night of booing, it's just one out of 82.
