What do the Oilers have to trade outside of draft picks?

Come on everyone-let’s not get too carried away. “Balls in the air” is clearly a reference to the draft.

Maybe Chia should do his zipper up.

So happy Petrovic is gone. Weegar is much better and I don’t think much of Weegar. Petro has the hockey IQ of Anton Babchuk’s poop. Some tools, but not even a tool belt let alone a toolbox. He’ll fit right in with Edmonton.

Puljujarvi and Nurse would be their biggest chips imo.

Maybe Koskinen or Talbot. Both pending UFAs. They may not be able to afford one of them, definitely not both.

Puljujarvi likely doesn't have a lot of value. A team like the Leafs may be interested in Nurse but I fail to see how trading one of their top 4 defensemen for a forward makes them better.

Why on earth would Spector tweet the phrase "balls in the air"? Is the man oblivious to what he just wrote?

Basically a 3rd and a 6th for Petrovic. Probably would’ve been better to combine those into a better puck mover. Chiarelli himself said that they don’t have any exceptional passers on the back end, so why not swing for the fences if this is truly his last ditch effort.

Nah. I am pretty sure Hall for Larsson set the bar for most baffling Oilers trades. This is just status quo for them.

Wideman: 2 assists in 5 Oiler games. Cap hit $1M. UFA at end of year. 43 pts in 175 games. Cost a 6th rnd pick.

Petrovic: 1 assist in 26 games. Cap hit $1.95M. UFA at end of year. 49 pts in 254 games. Cost a Chris Wideman and a 3rd round pick.

Chia, turning houses into paper clips since 2006.

Clearly they’ve turned to acquiring coaches and players born in Edmonton. As a last resort to the hopes of finding someone who wants to be there. The problem is Oil Brass, all of these players have since been somewhere else and know that everywhere else is better.

That explains the 3rd round pick being included in this deal, Chia was sick of people making fun of "the trade is one for one".

I can at least come up with a theoretical rationality there. There was a lot of talk about "addition through subtraction" with Hall, and it was forward for defenseman trade so again theoretically one might be more useful even if the other player is better. Smaller cap hit too.

But this? Same one year contract but significantly more cap hit, same position except likely worse, plus the loss of a pretty good draft pick.

Yeah it's not as bad as trading Hall, but I just can't see an argument to support this trade, so this baffles me more. If they just wanted to get rid of Wideman they could have waived him.
