This theory that putting a C on a guys sweater would change things because of some by gone era or whatever is... very strange.

The way I see it is, given its a few years away still, only a few guys have the opportunity to take it over once Gio's time is done.
- Monahan
- Tkachuk
- Bennett
- I think Monahan has been getting groomed for it and could be a guy like Sakic or Iginla in that they are quiet captains but lead none the less.
- I think Tkachuk might be the best choice in a vacuum but he might be better off as an assistant because he walks the line and that can't change if he is to remain as effective as he is. I'm not saying it would change but you never know.
- Bennett is a guy that I think could be the captain but he still needs to progress over the next few years to the point where he is a confident, consistent point producing player.
I love Backlund and he is the wildcard here for me but also don't know if he should be next in line. Might be time to go with a younger guy next go around.

I'd love it if one of our young D-men can pick it up and challenge. Andersson seemed to be chirping a bit in the Jets(?) game. Love that attitude about a player.

Yeah, if Andersson ends up in the top 4 I could see him as possible captain material in a few years.

Wasn't Monahan captain of his junior team or other teams? Seems he is well thought of for that role.
You don't always have to be the rah rah type to show leadership.

... what? Even if by some miracle we got him, why on earth would they give him the captaincy?

I have a feeling that Hanifin will be the guy. Not a knock on Tkachuk at all, but I think it's best if your captain is a little less controversial since a large part of the job is liaising with with the officials. Let's face it, Tkachuk's style doesn't exactly win over the ones knocking the gavel.

It’s going to be Monahan or Tkachuk, but I think Monahan is the better choice. He’s worn an A for a long time and was the first piece of the rebuild. I don’t think anyone other than those two is a realistic option, and I don’t really think anyone but those two would be a good choice.

What exactly are Monahan’s leadership skills that make him a potential captain? Or is it the fact he is one of the team’s better players?
I’m not arguing against him but just wondering what are the arguments for him?

So, why Hanifin over Monahan?

The truth is that nobody really knows what his leadership skills are except the team but he’s been wearing an A for a long time and under three different coaches so it’s not unreasonable to infer that he’s a leader on the team.

Does the Captain of the team matter?
Does the letter change anything?
In sports I played growing up who the Captain had zero affect on the team. I’m not sure if there would be a difference in professional sports.
So I’d put it on the guy you don’t want to lose in free agency to make it more difficult for them to leave. So Gaudreau

The main argument for him is he's already got an A on his chest, and had it by his third season. The guy seems to be a leader, every level he's played at. Monahan quickly slipped into a leadership role here. Beyond that I really don't know.
Monahan was captain of his midget team, captain of his OHL team (in his draft year) and it took him two years to earn a letter in the NHL. There is obvious leadership history here. As fans we can't pretend to know the inner workings of a locker room, so looking at who's been a leader make sense.

Regardless of who will be the next Captain, it sure is nice to have options.
All the while having a Captain who already shows pride and commitment wearing two Cs on his jersey.

What an odd choice. What captain-esque qualities do you think he has that would superseed Tkachuk or Monahan?

I'm not challenging you. I'm genuinely curious.
To me, he just seems like a very quiet, even keeled guy. Not overly vocal.

That sounds a lot like Iginla's reputation in the room. Never got too high or low and didn't throw garbage cans around after a bad game, but spoke when needed (2004 vs Canucks after they forced OT).

Flames have been so lucky having 2 straight world class captains Like Iginla and Gio. I hope someone steps up next time alot can change in 3 years. Maybe Hanifin if he turns into a top defender or maybe Backlund? No way Tkachuk becomes captain, pests dont get the C.
