I wish it would be 6.75 x 7, but more realistically 7.5 x 7, especially if he keeps playing the way he's playing.

Hard to find comparables considering age, position, production, etc.
Honestly, Draisaitl is probably the closest. He signed when he was 20, and had 51 and 77 point seasons under his belt. Tkachuk would have had over 51 last season and likely hits 77 that this season. Draisaitl also played winger a lot more earlier in his career. He makes $8.5M a season, so, yea, I think anything less than $7M/yr for Tkachuk is a bit of a pipe dream unfortunately.

I’m not nearly as optimistic as some of you are. I’m thinking he’ll be in the $9m range and I highly doubt he’ll take a discount.
I don’t really care though. Give that kid whatever he wants!

10 x 2 = 20
Yeah. $60 over 8 looks right

The Draisaitl comparison is useful for Tre. "See, if we pay you that kind of money, the rest of the team suffers and we have to fill it with AHL'ers. Is that what you want to play with? A team like Edmonton? Because they almost drafted you, you know?"

Tkachuk’s contract is going to be eeeeeeexpensive. Well ahead of Gio and Johnny especially if it hits the 8 year mark. It’s too bad Treliving didn’t get a deal done in the summer because it’s only getting more and more expensive with every passing game.
The good thing is, this is the only big contract we have to deal with as teams like Toronto, Winnipeg and eventually Vancouver will have to deal with 3 or 4 gargantuan contracts. Toronto itself might have the most expensive duo in hockey after this season.

Probably $6.75M until Gio retires and then over $8M for the remainder of the deal.

IF Duchene gets over 8 million, Tkachuck going to get paid......Makes the term on the Neal deal hurt more.

8 years, 8.25M per.
Structured like others have mentioned with him making 6.75M per during Gio’s existing contract.

Treliving doesn't seem to push for 7 or 8 year contracts. But if there was anyone to go long on, it would be Tkachuk.

It's possible to satisfy the team's internal cap of 6.75M that Gio & Gaudreau are at, while still paying Tkachuk market value. After this season, Gio & JG will have 3yrs remaining @ 6.75M, so Treliving could structure an 8yr deal as:
6.75
6.75
6.75
8.25
8.25
8.25
8.25
8.25
8yrs @ $7.69M AAV, and the team's 6.75M Gio/Gaudreau cap becomes the 8.25M Tkachuk cap in 2023/24.

People thinking he’s going to sign at the “Gio Cap” for the good of the team need to pass me some of what they’re smoking. Comparing what an absolute stud will get paid next year to by that time 3 and 4 year old contracts is actually crazy talk. The number probably starts with an 8 and if we’re lucky it starts with a 7.

I wonder if the team structures it in a way to insulate tkachuk's risk from a lockout and get some AAV savings for doing so

I think it'll be under 8. What are his comparables?
Working against him is that he's a winger, not a centre.
Draisaitl was paid as a centre, which makes that all the more hilarious.
Working against the Flames, is that he's the son of Keith "hold out" Tkachuk.

I think we should all look back at the predictions for Gio's contract, and for Gaudreau's. Gio was gonna make $9M and Johnny was going to make $8M according to many here.
Don't get me wrong, Tkachuk is in a good spot (and I doubt Treliving could have signed him in the summer). But Treliving hasn't signed a bad extension yet.

I would prefer 6.75 X 3, then 7.95 X 5 for a total of 60M, AAV 7.5M, with a modified NTC and lockout protection. Not sure this would get it done, but if anyone could do it, it would be Treliving.

He's worth an extra million or so per year for his work in the BOA alone.
It feels AWESOME having a kid that drives our biggest opponents (literally) insane, and then to rub salt in the wound scores a bunch of goals while doing it.
I really don't care what he gets paid, he's worth every penny.

RFA's in 2019:
Matthews inj
Laine 11 goals 14 pts
Marner 6 goals 28 pt
Rantanen 8 goals 32 pts
Aho 6 goals 23 pts
Connor 10 goals 20 pts
Boesser inj
Point 14 goals 26 pts
Meirer 12 goals 21 pts
Tkachuk 11 goals 25 pts
At the quarter done everyone at 10+ goals is looking at 40 goals.. everyone with 20 pts is looking at 80 pts.
add in Werenski, Provorov, Trouba
Are all these guys going to get 8 x 8 ?
Would that wipe out the UFA market? Have a bunch of buyouts?
Or will there be bridge contracts?
Karlsson from Vegas and his 43 goals 78 pts +48 last year would have been near the top of this list not so much on a 20 goal pace this year

If Nylander doesn't get signed and has to truck off to Europe, that sure doesn't help Matt's cause. He can see how playing hardball with a talented team plays out.
