I’m pretty sure if they claim him back they can send him to minors freely

it was definitely the case with Boychuk back then. Maybe they've changed it, but I don't think so.

I think the most pragmatic thing to do is to start the season with what's in camp, and to trade for a goalie if necessary after actually seeing Flames goalies in game action.

Only if no other team put in a claim.

It's currently being discussed on Vancouver's TSN 1040.

Doesn't sound like any Flames were put on waivers today.

Guess that means at least one of the young waiver eligible guys is going down (Dube/Mangiapane/Valimaki/Andersson).

And most likely Andersson since I doubt they run with 3 RH d-men in the bottom 3 (Prout, Andersson, Stone).

Waiving him would buy some flexibility if he struggles and Gilles has a strong start in Stockton.
But if he did get claimed, they'd be hooped.

Sounds like Carrick may have been traded.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Hearing that Connor Carrick wasn't actually placed on waivers today after #leafs announced at 10:30 a.m. he would be. Standby...

I don't think Sam Gagner is any good, but I wonder if part of this decision is predicated on pressure to start graduating a steady stream of prospects to the NHL in Vancouver. Gagner is probably legitimately a top-12 player on the Canucks roster, but it may be more important for them to be giving more NHL t8ime to the likes of Goldobin, Gaudette, Dahlen, etc. (I'm pretty sure I have butchered the spelling of each one of those names.)

With no waivers, Gillies goes down and one of Andersson or Valimaki I suspect for 14F + 7D + 2G.

I find it a little nuts that Gagner is on waivers. That Vancouver team is extremely low on skill. As bad as Gagner may be in other areas, he is still skilled and can put up some points now and then, especially on the power play 2nd unit.

I mean, I guess Travis is working on building a better culture of work ethic a la Hartley and co., but it still seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

As for the backups, I'm far from convinced that Pickard is an upgrade. McElhinney is probably a much more reliable option, but I still think both Rittich and Gillies have strong potential. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but making a claim on one of the Toronto goalies would affect our asset management. You have to be wiling to lose Rittich on waivers if you make a claim. You'd have to be certain that the goalie you claim is a clear upgrade. I find it hard to be that certain.

I hope the Flames don't claim McElhinney only because I hate typing McElhinney.
