Taking my 2 oldest kids (4 and 6) to their first NHL game today. Hopefully the Flames put on a good show!

It will likely be a younger group suiting up for the #Flames today in Edmonton - Bill Peters noted yesterday it will be last chance for players to make an impression.

Game time is 1:00 PM MT and will be streamed on Calgary Flames dot com (regional restrictions). #CGYvsEDM

How? Didn't they send the majority of the young guys back to their respected teams?

I am guessing that means Dube, Valimaki, Eat Bread, Andersson all slot in.

Last chance for auditions? No, the last game should be the full lineup prepping for game #1. I've seen this team start slow so many times over the years with different coaches and the one constant I see is the coaching staff not solidifying the lines until the season starts. I'm really annoyed by this, as I am every time I see a coach do this. Auditions should be over by now.

I heard that Monahan is sitting out tonight, along with Lazar and Hathaway.

Mangiapane, Peluso, and Dube still in among forwards fighting for spots. Might be a bad sign for those guys, but at least they are getting another look.

Haven't heard anything about the D.

My thoughts exactly. I really hope Peters doesn't tinker the lineup too much.

If Lazar and Hathaway are not playing tonight, that sounds like they are done as Flames

From what we’ve heard from canes fans peters likes using a line blender and I think we’ll need to get used to it.

We’ve got 1 forward roster spot and 1 defenceman spot - and we have two young forwards and two young defenders actively battling for those spots against each other and some other fringe veterans - this is what happens when you have good depth.

It’s for the 12th forward and 6th defenceman spot, it’s a good thing.

It’s not like we’re signing players on the last day prior to the start of the season who haven’t skated with the team all summer or something...

I think there are diminishing returns to preseason preparation. At a certain point, you just need to get into the season. I don't think having the full lineup in for one last preseason hurrah does much for you. And Peters has to coach to coach well, not to coach against the flames past.

I'm actually encouraged that younger players playing means they have legit chances to make the team. Hoping for Dube and a Dman.

^^ Is one game really going to sway the decision that much? They should know what they have with these guys

I agree with KFF, the last preseason game (and I would argue the last two) should be with the opening-night roster

Except the Flames have played a ton of preseason games now. More than every other team.

Almost every spot has been filled. The lineup tonight will still be 90% complete.
I'm not too worried about it.

If anything, I think they should keep some of the younger kids up and play them for game one (Valimaki/Andersson + Mangiapane/Dube). I bet the Flames will do better in the first 10 games if they have more young guys in the lineup.

I remember hearing Peters say he wanted the final preseason game to have his regular lineup dressed so it's odd to hear he will ice young guys to give them one last look.

Literally contradicting himself if true.

The young guys pushing so hard maybe changed his mind?

He initially said the last game. Then he wanted the final two games to tidy up systems. Then he was pretty positive about their game in San Jose, so perhaps he amended his wishes back to just one full game for the NHL group.

Probably. Dube, Andersson, and Valimaki have been especially impressive. As much as I'd like to see our full regular lineup today, it makes sense that these guys would draw in for one last shot to impress the coaching staff.

On the other side, you just know the Oilers are gonna ice their full A squad just so they can claim that they're preseason gods and that they should be gifted the Cup straight out of the gate.

With the way Valamaki and Dude played in SJ, I think it might. Had they looked like teenagers entering their first professional season then maybe the approach to today's game might be different, but I suspect this is primarily about a few players making the final decision extremely difficult for the coaching staff.

Yeah not a good sign for those two if true. The only chance would be as extra forwards.
