I wonder if the reaction to this "bid" is negative enough if they'll just save the money and pull the plebiscite (and bid of course)

No thanks, if we don't get a new arena and football stadium out of it then this is a big no. I really hope that most of the city say no to this.
Why in the hell are we upgrading anything at Whistler? Are the people/city of Whistler pitching in for these costs? Likely not. This is silly.

I’ve been against these from the beginning, but was starting to sway thinking it’d be nice to have a new arena and stadium, but if we’re not going to get either, im back to a no.

Just so everyone understands the breakdown, $5.3B = $3B paid by three forms of govt.
This has not been broken down yet, but it is believed to be 50% federal ($1.5B), 25-25 Prov-City, meaning Calgary residents are on the hook for $750M.
This $750M cost would mean improvements to McMahon, The Oval, Winsport, etc, along with a new field house and rink to replace the Corral.
(ETA: Much of these improvements are going to be done anyway.)
$750M between 1M residents, over a 10 year span (2019-2029) would be $75 per person per year.
Is the Olympics worth $75 a year to you?

It is not. All of the values in the hosting plan are in Canadian dollars.
Here is the Hosting Plan concept being presented to Council today: https://www.calgary2026.ca/s/BidCo-H...dWebSept10.pdf

These things are going to cost Calgary Taxpayers without the Olympics.

I am 99% certain we will have a new arena in Calgary within 5 years. CSEC has been waiting for the Olympic Bid to pan out before getting back to the table.
Olympic bid = Federal money.
Arena is coming no matter what.

It really is embarrassing that a city of our size, population, wealth and standard of living can't find a way to build new professional sports infrastructure. Cities smaller than us have gotten more done in less time.

Not if it isn't used to replace the arena and stadium. Otherwise it is just throwing away money IMHO and lacks long-term vision.
This city has
- Basically no ball diamond capable of hosting any minor league level of ball
- An aging stadium that is the worst in the league
- And aging arena that is arguably the worst in the league
At some point as a city we need to decide of those things matter to us or not. To host an olympics and spend all that money and not get that stuff would be idiotic.

Nenshi just read a letter from the Federal government confirming that they will follow standard policy and cover 50% of the public funding costs.
Federal costs = Provincial + Municipal costs.

Serious question: Did you expect a new arena to be IN this rollout? Putting it out there that the city is funding some of the arena would make Ken King laugh and laugh and laugh.
I suspect that the funds that are earmarked for the Corral rebuild is actually a *Pssst, this is actually for a new arena*....
Take it all with a grain of salt, as the city doesnt want to give CESC leverage in ANY negotiations.

Well not including it appears to have basically killed any chance of the plebiscite passing, so I suppose the better question is did the bid committee seriously think that many people wanted to just host the Olympics for the sake of hosting the Olympics.

As usual everything the City does is half-assed.
No thanks.
EDIT: if it turns out a new stadium and arena are included I vote yes.

Like I said in the other thread, the cost of the new 5000-6000 seat arena in this olympic bid plus the saddledome renovation is probably exactly how much the city is willing to contribute to a new Flames arena.
