Pacioretty, with the exception of last year, was a perennial 30 goal man. I think he's top 5 for most even strength goals the last 5 or so seasons. Tatar was a healthy scratch for the Knights. Is Suzuki that good?
I hate the way Montreal has treated their captain the last year or so. I bet he signs an extension and does great in zero pressure Vegas.
Vegas gets the better player, but Bergevin actually gets a few pieces that might help. I don't know if I like it, hate it.... Vegas is playing for now on this deal. If they go all the way this year, it might be great for them.

#Habs Bergevin says Pacioretty asked for a trade last season but adds that at the time he did not tell his captain that he had intentions of dealing him away.

Really depends if Vegas can get him for less than 6 years, less than ~6 per. Basically look at JVR's deal and knock off a mil AAV or so.

He already reportedly turned down a 6x6 from the Kings. Don't think he is going to sign for less than that.

I agree. Between this and the Tatar trade Vegas is really gambling away their future on something that could've been a fluke.
I don't know how Bergevin still has a job either. Prices's window is definitely closed I can't imagine he wants to waste away in MTL at this point.
That being said VGK is better off today and that sucks for the flames.

Suzuki has a lot of potential to make this look very silly pretty quickly.
As much as Vegas wanted Max, Montreal should have been more desperate to get a return for him before he walks. Would have to think that Bergevin was willing to accept much less, but he's also the kind of GM that would let a player walk rather than accept a trade that makes him look bad. We've been hearing of Max on the move for a while now, so it'd be interesting to see what Bergevin was asking of other teams around the league.

True... but wasn't that at the draft? They can now point to that JVR contract and say, "look, this guy's a year younger than you'll be going into your next contract and coming off a 36 goal season, and this is what he got on the open market. You just scored 37 points. And you want the same contract as him?" It's just not reasonable.
I guess they could let the season play out and let him earn his money, if he can.

He got Tatared and feathered in that trade with the wings.

2nds always carry some value.
Reminds me a bit of the Duchene trade - Ottawa paid a ton to upgrade Turris to Duchene, Vegas paid a ton to upgrade Tatar to Pacioretty.
Also makes no sense since they were supposedly hesitant to move their top prospects (Glass/Suzuki) for Karlsson.

I never said it was a bad trade for Montreal, but it's frustrating to see a team in our division get better for this season.

Regardless of what they paid for him at the deadline, Tatar didn't fit in in Vegas. Basically, they lost nothing from their roster and added a 30 goal scorer. I hate this trade...
I'd rather Vegas make trades like the first Tatar trade. :/

MTL cleaning house. Flames should make a pitch for Price.
Frolik, Bennett, Gillies + a pick for Price (and some salary retained)?

Please leave the embarrassing trade proposals on HFboards.

I also think Montreal won this.... considering they had Patches for like 8 or 9 months and he clearly wasn't going to re-sign and he declined pretty massively last year (who knows if he'll rebound as he's about to turn 30).
Tatar has been a pretty consistent 20 goal guy and he's younger, they got a blue chip prospect IMO and a 2nd?
Seems like a desperation move by McPhee, one of those ones where they've convinced themselves they "have a window" and start overspending on vets to plug holes like when the Jays traded Syndergaard and D'Arnaud for J.A. Dickey.

Over the past 4 seasons, Tatar has never scored less than 20 goals and has averaged 23.75 goals/season. Pacioretty is a 30 goal scorer instead of a 20 goal scorer, but is 2 years older and is going to be very expensive in his 30s (turned down 6*6). Meanwhile, the Habs get a 2019 2nd and Suzuki, a great CENTRE prospect.
I hate most deals Bergevin makes, but this one seems like a good bet.

There are eight-years remaining on that contract. No thanks.

It makes sense for Pacioretty to sign now. If he has another 30-40 point, 15 goal season suddenly he's 30 years old and last season isn't an outlier. He could cost himself a lot of money by going to free agency.
