I just re-read the entire thread to confirm, and not one poster suggested that this is a bad contract. At worst a few posters have expressed uneasiness at signing a goalie for eight years. I don’t see anyone “downgrading” this particular deal. It seems an odd thing to mention in a thread in which there is unanimous agreement about the quality of the player.

Yep. My only reservations are that Gibson may not be quite as good as the Ducks' defensive play makes him look, and eight years is a long, long time commitment when signing a witch doctor. We have often seen goalies fall off suddenly and inexplicably from one year to the next. Flames fans, of all people, ought to know this.

I think this is not only a pretty minimal gamble (a 25 year old goalie with four NHL seasons and 3 as a very good starter is not very likely to fall off a cliff), it’s a move that sets up a very inexpensive cornerstone for the future.
