Michael Stone really enhances their chances to re-sign the good Stone. Hopefully BT jumps on that.

James Neal most certainly did not sign at a discount. Stone is a better and considerably younger player.

Pfft if I'm door knob in Ottawa, I'm on the phone with an offer of a lifetime to Chia.
I'm going send you Stone and retain a million. I'm going to help you make your fans happy, first by you getting rid of Lucic, second for this year you can make the fans forget about how bad your team is by getting an elite winger for McDavid.
But all I want back is your first unprotected, Lucic and either Bear or Poolparty.
Edmonton suddenly gets a win on the cap side and a win on the winger side.
With Stone gone, I find a way to move Karlsson.
With Stone gone and sluggish Lucic in his place there's no way that I don't finish dead freaking last. There's always a chance that Edmonton's loser characteristics kick in and the Oilers miss the playoffs and their pick is another lottery pick. There's a possibility now of getting Ottawa fans excited with the next draft and the chance to get the next great things x 2

and if you're Lucic, what's the incentive to waive your NMC and go to Ottawa? I don't see him waiving to play on a team that's not going to be competitive in the next 5 years.

To get out of Edmonton, to go to a team with next to no pressure to win. To get out of Edmonton.

Why are people lambasting the sens over the one year deal? I don't believe they had a choice. If they said no stone just goes to arb and gets a one year deal anyway. Dude clearly just wants to leave.

Were I the Ottawa GM I would be extremely worried about carrying a nearly useless player with a $7.0 m cap-hit for FIVE YEARS. The plan heading into a rebuild has to be emerging from it before Lucic's deal expires, and that essentially handcuffs the team on the other end.

That, and they already have one Bobby Ryan. I can't imagine they'd want two.

If I owned the Ottawa Senators, there is one circumstance in which I might be tempted to trade for Lucic. That's if I was a complete, Harold Ballard grade arsehole, and had a good deal in the works to sell the Canadian Tire Centre site. I'd trade for all the bad contracts I could get, fill the roster with minimum-salary players, and then rip out all the seats in the arena and sell them on eBay, because nobody would be coming to the home games anyhow.
When the time came, I'd put the team up for sale to the highest out-of-town bidder. When Bettman came calling to try to keep the Sens in Ottawa, I'd tell him: ‘So sorry, Mr. Commissioner. Our arena is already scheduled for demolition and we don't own the land anymore. You want a hockey team in Ottawa? Ask the National Capital Commission to build a new arena for the new owners to use, and by the way, good luck with that!’
Part of me has always thought it would be a lot of fun to out-Ballard Ballard.

He's still a young player and teams go crazy on July 1st every year, but I do wonder how many teams will be interested in going above $7.35M next year for Stone when he becomes available. $8M+ for a winger better get you a top 10 or top 15 winger in the league and Stone isn't that right now.

Does't Colorado have the Sens 1st rounder in 2019?

If Colorado gets Hughes with that pick, the Duchesne trade is probably going to go down as one of the worst in recent history.

Its kind of weird really, why pull the trigger on that trade when you dont know if Karlsson is sticking around and then add the rest of the uncertainty around the team, it just doesnt make any sense.
If you're going to be terrible for a while it makes more sense to hang on to your picks.

The story was that the Sens were interested in Duchene for at least a year before the trade. Remember that at the time of the Duchene trade, the Sens had just made a run to double OT game 7 of the ECF. I doubt anyone had an idea they would collapse the way they did.
Hard to be a Sens fan when the only three quality items (Karlsson, Duchene, and Stone) they still have are UFA in July. Plus the circus going on with Karlsson and Hoffman.

When the Sens traded for Duchene they were 2nd in their division and coming off being a goal away from the Cup final.
In hindsight the trade could turn out to be one of the worst ever but at the time it seemed like a solid move that would help Ottawa return to the playoffs.

Crazy how fast the wheels can fall off as years of building a team up to a point where they are a goal away from being in the finals to shambles in a span of months.
