Wilson is good at what his role is, but that role is not worth 5.17m.
Ferland is not signing here next year. With this current group he is a third line guy at best.

You can't really compare this contract to ones like Lucuc and Brouwer because the Caps are getting Wilson for his prime years.

He is not likely to regress during the term of this deal, and may even get better.

Having said this, this is an astounding cap hit. I would have never guessed this high.

Like you all I like Wilson and would love to have him here but there's no way In Hell I'd pay him that much.i give him 2.5 to 3 million then settle on 3.5 .the caps will regret signing him to that much in my opinion. I hope he will continue to get better and show ever one he deserves that much.but I really dont think he will

How far off was that dude who predicted all the contracts? He seems to have been close on most so far, so it would really be telling if he was a few mil off.

I can only assume Tom Wilson is about to marry Ted Leonsis' daughter (or son, not that there is anything wrong with that). Now he can stop hitting and ease himself into retirement.

Let me ask this question:

For rough and tumble power wingers, is he top of the list in the NHL right now?

Who do you think you are comparing him to here? He has 35 career goals.

Lucic is tough, and he has a 30 goal season.

The Caps have Ovi under contract for 3 more years and Holtby and Backstrom under for 2 more. That's their window to repeat. Wilson's contract may be godawful but if he can repeat a similar playoff run in the next 2-3 years or if he can hit 40+ points this won't look as bad. When Ovi's looking for a new contract at 35 and Oshie is 34 with 4 more years under contract they'll look pretty bad but there's no reason to think that they can't repeat, even if Wilson's hit his ceiling.

Then offer him a 3 year deal for that money.

Or, you know, pay him a reasonable amount and you don't have t worry about it.

Oh I know. Obviously a lot more has to go right for this signing to look reasonable in hindsight. Nothing in the player's performance, outside of a small sample size, warrants the length or AAV of this contract. My point was more that for this signing to look historically reasonable, Wilson will have to repeat his .75 ppg in the playoffs and become a consistent 40+ point guy and I'm unaware of what indication there is of this being a certainty.

Maybe they identified him as a guy you win with. Some guys are only good to get you to the playoffs. Others play their best in the playoffs and help you win when it matters.

Shades of Lowe in 2006 with Pisani and Moreau after good playoffs with ridiculous money and term.

Would’ve been like the Flames signing Donovan long term after 2004...never mind Conroy, who they let walk.

Neal contract looks even better compared to this. Well I suppose the same could be said about any contract.

He's only 24 so I don't think it's that bad of a deal as others make it to be. He's nowhere near the wrong side of 30. The Caps are banking on Wilson taking the next step forward, so in that sense it's a gamble in that they hope he continues trending up. But people said the same thing about Marchand years ago after the Bruins cup win and he turned out just fine.

I really think Wilson is one of the up and coming skilled-pests in the league, and his contract will be just fine going forward. He played a huge role in bringing the cup to DC. If you're going to pay someone big like this who might not quite deserve it, at the very least you can say they played a big role in bringing you to the holy grail.
