The biggest problem was for years, the CRA went around bullying people and scaring the crap out of them, so of course to someone that's maybe older or not that smart, they're going to believe the threats. When they say they're sending an RCMP office to your door to collect, these people aren't going to phone the thcops. They are expecting to see a cop.
They still bully people. CRA feels the need to "randomly" either preassess or review all of my supporting documents every single year since I separated from my first wife with the threat of reassessment if I don't sent everything in, at my own expense. I don't know why they can't keep my 80 page divorce agreement on file.
I seriously think they are the biggest group of holes going.
You would think after four years in a row of this they would accept my tax return as is and go after real abusers. Maybe they hired my ex?

Once, I was in Waves coffee shop, which has a Bitcoin ATM. I witnessed an old lady hobble in, and stare at the machine in confusion. She seemed quite distressed. The staff and a couple other patrons spoke with her and explained she was being scammed.
The Windows/Microsoft one is my favorite, I told them I didn't own a PC because I had 8 Ipads or something ridiculous like that. He audibly gasped " 8 Ipads????" then started into the benefits of owning a PC.
I once kept a scammer on the line for 21 minutes as he tried to get me to log onto a Remote Desktop site to "fix my computer" from a virus "Microsoft" had detected.
I spend most of the time trying to get him to teach me how to use the internet and access a website, asking if when he said "press enter" I should type E-N-T-E-R.
Around the end I told him my computer had frozen and pretended to cry because the virus he detected must have ruined my computer.
The call ended with me making barnyard noises until he hung up.

lol that’s awesome!!
I’ll admit they almost got me back when Skyrim came out, I was installing it when they called, and said they detected unusual activity on my PC, I caught on and asked them if they knew my Windows serial number and they got all pissy and hung up.

One thing that bugs me about CRA scams is not that the robocalls come from some weird telephone numbers, but that they do give a real North American phone number in their message for people to call back. Even if that number is forwarding to India or wherever they are, someone has registered it under their name with the phone company, which means it should be traceable. No?

The thing that bugs me most is they can’t invest enough to have it proofed by someone who speaks English. The sentence structures and grammar are terrible!
I just chirp them about it the whole time until the message is through, even if they don’t listen to the playback.
Those people are in the book of scum of the earth.
The serious thing about these scams is how badly they affect people. I talk on the phone for a living, primarily to people that have a low income and one lady called me to say she had lost $30,000 to scammers and that they keep trying to get her again. It took a lot of convincing on my part to have her believe that future attempts were nefarious. It is quite sad.

Not necessarily. You can subscribe to apps that provide a number (Canadian area codes, and local exchange nxx’s), without capturing payment nor credit info.
I played along with the Windows scam since I have a Mac. He eventually got frustrated that I couldn’t follow the instructions and hung up.
Not a scam, but I had the same telemarketing company call me within ten seconds on my phone and business land lines. I held the two receivers together and let them try to sell each other.
