Really? I wasn't aware of that. I always assumed somebody had to wear the C in a game.

I have a hard time penciling Brouwer in on any line, and his leadership role has been replaced by Neal whose presence will only be shadowed by Gio the day training camp starts I'll bet. I haven't heard Peters mention him too much either, and he's talked quite a bit about his plans. Besides his name coming up when rattling off names he'll try on that top line, I can't think of where I've heard Peters pencil him in. I really think he's the 13th forward at best right now so that letter has to be re-assigned anyway.

I think there are 2 locks,:
C - Giordano
A - Monahan

one that is this everywhere he plays:
A - Neal

and one that has been very well earned:
A - Backlund

I would bet it'll be Backlund for away, and Monahan for home with the top-two leaders in the room wearing theirs full-time. I don't think anyone would bat an eye at the veteran on Monahan's line wearing it in white, and Backlund just feels right as the away Captain for some reason.

Really think Gaudreau has earned it as well at this point though. As Huntingwhale pointed out, he's given a lot to this team and is a big reason people would want to play here. If you can have that many Captains on the roster, it would be cool to see Monahan's A go to Gaudreau on the 3rd jersey nights or something. But then the Monahan retro will have less of a Nieuwendyk feel... so tough.

No, it’s just uncommon. Habs didn’t have a captain in 14/15.

Vegas had no C last year IIRC.

Vegas didn't have a captain through the whole Cup run.

You're allowed to dress 3 players wearing a letter in a game, either one captain and two alternates, or three alternates. I don't believe there is any rule about how many different players can wear a letter over the course of a season.

Some teams will have certain players wear the A at home and others wear it on the road. The Flames did this under Hartley.

That is how I understood the rule. Although I thought you did have to name a captain, even if it wasn't the same guy each game.

One year the Wild chose a new captain each month... although my memory is muddy, maybe it was San Jose. It happened quite some time ago though.

From the NHL Rule Book...
Quote:
Rule 6 – Captain and Alternate Captains

6.1 Captain - One Captain shall be appointed by each team, and he alone shall have the privilege of discussing with the Referee any questions relating to interpretation of rules which may arise during the progress of a game. He shall wear the letter “C,” approximately three inches (3'') in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of his sweater. No co-Captains are permitted. Either one Captain and no more than two Alternate Captains, or no Captain and no more than three Alternate Captains are permitted (see 6.2).

Only the Captain, when invited to do so by the Referee, shall have the privilege of discussing any point relating to the interpretation of rules. Any Captain, Alternate Captain or any player who comes off the bench and makes any protest or intervention with the officials for any purpose shall be assessed a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct under Rule 39 – Abuse of Officials. Should this protest continue, he may be assessed a misconduct penalty, and if it further continues, a game misconduct penalty shall be warranted.

A complaint about a penalty is NOT a matter “relating to the interpretation of the rules” and a minor penalty shall be imposed against any Captain, Alternate Captain or any other player making such a complaint.

The Referee and Official Scorer shall be advised, prior to the start of each game, the name of the Captain and the Alternate Captains of both teams.

No playing Coach or playing Manager or goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as Captain or Alternate Captain.

6.2 Alternate Captains – If the permanent Captain is not on the ice, Alternate Captains (not more than two) shall be accorded the privileges of the Captain. Alternate Captains shall wear the letter “A” approximately three inches (3'') in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of their sweaters.

Only when the Captain is not in uniform, the Coach shall have the right to designate three Alternate Captains. This must be done prior to the start of the game.

Toronto also didn’t have a Captain last year.

I think the Flames need to bring Neal into the leadership group. One way you could do this is by removing Brouwer’s “A” and having it rotate between two players based on home/away games.

Road Alternate:
Backlund

Home Alternate:
Neal

Permanent Alternate:
Monahan

Permanent Captain:
Giordano

^ Some of that rule is inconsistent. Only the Captain may discuss interpretation? But there are ACs and they seem to be able to as well (since they get a minor for complaining about penalties which are not "interpretations").

It seems like the rule says you have to have a captain, but we know it wasn't done by Vegas. And that Vancouver didn't have an official captain because it was unofficially Luongo.

The Wild rotated their captain for the first 9 years of their existence (as long as Lemaire was their coach): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnes...#Team_captains

When Todd Richards took over as the coach, he named Koivu their captain, and he has been so ever since.

Thinking on this, maybe the political way for Peters to do it is to secretly take Brouwer aside and ask him to give it up in favour of Neal as the new UFA signing. Make it look like Brouwer's call or even convince him that it is. Then he's the big guy sacrificing his spot for the team.

I wonder what is happening in Vegas this season. One would think they will name a captain, no?

Did Tavares actually get named captain? If not, I'm sure he will be. But I didn't hear anything about it.

Did you not watch the 6 episode mini-series outlining the succession plans to the throne?

Not yet, but I'd be very surprised if that's not the plan

Way to early to tell if Neal will be in the mix.

Well given Derek Engellend won the Mark Messier Leadership award you'd think he'd have to get the C?
