Sure fine. But if JG and SM are elite forwards in their late twenties ... you won't be signing them for a combined $13mil. They will both want $10 mil plus per year.
These days ... you want to sign a top player ... you pay big and long term. LA had no choice but to pay for Drew Doughty or lose him before they want too.

Discuss.

Kopitar and Doughty won 2 cups. They earned it.

Or Toews and Kane for 21 million. What would be the best duo:Kane and Toews, Doughty and Kopitar or Draisatl snd McDavid. All for the same price

The Chicago duo has delivered more cups.

It shouldn't be. Doughty is going to be 37 when his deal is done. Players in his peers group, historically, remain effective well onto their late 30s.
Lidstrom - 41
Niedermayer - 36 (could've played longer)
Pronger - 37 (injuries)
Rafalski - 37 (could've played longer)
Stevens - 39
Chara - 40
Bourque - 40
MacInnes - 40 (eye injuries)
Coffey - 39
Fetisov - 39
That's Drew Doughty's historical peer group. You can debate whether or not all those guys were still themselves at the end of their careers - most of them were. Pronger could've played another five years without the concussions - he was the best defenseman in the league when his career ended.
Doughty doesn't have a history of leg injuries (or any injuries). He's Drew friggin Doughty.
Pay the man his money. It's not like you can replace him.

man, how good is Victor Hedmans contract in comparison. Just entering his second year of an 8 year deal with a 7.8m cap hit. Yzerman is so good.

Doughty is one of the top 3 defensemen in the league. He should be getting paid.

He's played 1 season + 26 games for a terrible team. Everyone drops off after 30. Most of the elite D listed reinvent themselves and adjust their games to offset their physical limitations.
I'm not writing his hockey obituary yet.

Hedman has been an elite defenseman for a couple years, and a Norris candidate for one or two.
Doughty has been elite for most of his career, a perennial Norris candidate, and has - you know - drank from the chalice a couple of times.
Plus, salaries keep going up. If Hedman were negotiating this summer, after winning the Norris, his number would be much closer to $10M.

Hedman's contract was as a pending RFA as well, not UFA like DD.

Yeah all contract contracts got reset with the McDavid deal, flames were very lucky to get Johnny and Mony done before that.

Nope Hedman was going to be a UFA at the end of his last deal. I remember because at one point the Bolts had both Stamkos and Hedman going UFA in their primes and I couldn't believe Stevie Y would risk losing them both to UFA like that with their last RFA contracts. Stamkos was last year and Hedman would have been this year had he not signed his extension early.
Both deals are looking more and more like absolute steals too with every passing year and high profile signing.

Really? I'm getting old then. I still think of him as a young defenceman, but I guess he's 27 already.

Seems I got my years mixed up. The Stamkos ordeal was 2 years ago already. Good grief time does fly.
Stamkos was set to be a UFA at 26 in 2016. They re-signed him just before free agency.
Hedman was set to be a UFA at 26 in 2017 and they extended him a year early (1 day after Stamkos signed his extension).

I am a huge Doughty fan, he is easily a top 3-5 defenseman in the league and you could easily argue he's the best all round defenseman in the league. You knew this was going to get this contract so I have no problem with it and fully believe he will be elite for 6 of those 8 years.
Some guys I have problem backing the truck up to pay and Doughty is one of them.
