I'm a high school teacher. These kids are infinitely more compassionate today and way more thoughtful of social issues and the environment. Gives me a tad bit of hope.

Also, Over the Edge was a great movie. They dont make em like that anymore. Movies and music got crappier. There seems to have been a trade off.

Despite the grumbling of old people, every generation is more developed than the one that preceded it and the world has consistently become a better place as a result.

More developed in everything except toughness and resilience. Put my kids in a 70s schoolyard, or any of us in a pulp mill town in the 50s, and we'd curl up into balls and weep.

I dont see how this is relevant barring the invention of a time machine.

Our culture doesn't exist in a bubble, having a weaker culture creates a vulnerability to a more aggressive one and we would be relying on our overall cultural development to continue to shield us from that type of a scenario. I think it's largely a catch 22 because as threatening cultures develop, they will also tend towards peacefulness.

Also, if a solar flare knocks out the grid and the world plunges into chaos, the bullies are eating the math club.

Odd post given it's made on the anniversary of D-Day.

You don't think it's a positive development that we don't have to go to war to liberate Europe from fascism?

That's interesting because there have been studies of late that indicate human intelligence is declining.

That study was based exclusively on the existence of 'The Jersey Shore!'

Its not wrong though...

I think this process is similar to income polarization and slow killing of the true middle-class, which is the foundation of any stable society. The evolution of late has been creating super-dumb people in exponentially high pace. Duck Dynasty, Kasrdashians, Real Wives, Jersey Shore were unthinkable in the 60's. Now, this quality of entertainment is copied all over the world, because it is appreciated by the viewers.

This is a call to arms for sass-mouthed teachers to mercilessly stamp out stupidity. A culture that caters to the weak, becomes weak. Truly they are the ones doing god's work.

I assume that as technology improves and more and more things become automated, the less humans will be challenged to adapt, create, learn, etc.

To a degree, perhaps. I assume, similar conversations were held in the late 1800's, when older officers bitterly complained about the youth not willing to learn fencing anymore... Some skills are definitely used a lot less nowadays - mental math being a good example. Not a good thing, perhaps, but inevitable. Will it soon become a useless skill, like fencing or calligraphy?

You don't have to be dumb to like shows like that. My ex-girlfriend was a lawyer with an extremely high IQ, but loved the Kardashians, Real Housewives, etc....

It's the modern day equivalent of pulp books, soap operas, tabloids, etc...

Not all intelligent people sit around reading Aristotle and pontificating in the meaning of life in their free time. Some people just like mindless entertainment. The change from the 60s has more to do with a chance in what's considered vulgar. Prior to the internet, people were very controlled in what they could access, both information and entertainment wise. Now you can find anything. Audiences no longer have the same hang-ups about what's considered proper anymore.

I do agree that the middle class is being destroyed, however. That's a separate issue and has more to do with the baby boomers economic strangle hold on capital/real estate and wages that aren't keeping up with inflation.

Yeah.... and The Three Stooges, Archie Bunker, & Charlie Chaplin were rocket scientists.

All of those were intended as light just-for-laughs comedy - goofy and unsophisticated, but kind and tasteful. Real Wives and Duck Dynasty are not even in the same category.
