The silver lining about Tkachuk is that his concussion happened at the end of the season and they were out of the playoff picture so there wasn't a need/ pressure to rush him back into the lineup. He had lots of time to recover and now he has all summer to continue recovering. The more time you can avoid any impact, post concussion is a good thing.
I think with Smith's comment, he was implying that, before he got injured they were still in the thick of things. With his absence they really started sputtering and he felt a lot of pressure to comeback into the lineup and be the Smith from the first half of the year where he more less carried the team to success

I’m not sure what he thinks the goalie’s job is. Not a lot of handles. He can’t score, so stop the puck.

Mike Smith, on if there was enough battling for teammates on the #Flames: “I think we had guys that stepped up, for sure. You’re always looking for more, but we had guys step up all season long and go to battle for each other. I think that definitely wasn’t an issue.”
Pat Steinberg@Fan960Steinberg
Mike Smith will not be representing Canada at the Worlds. #Flames

Part of the league and teams showing that they take concussions seriously is to stop this crap about upper body injuries.
If a guy has a concussion. SAY IT. ACKNOWLEDGE IT. Show that you are actually DEALING with it.

I think he means by putting too much mental pressure on himself he overthought too much. When you do that you're prone to make mistakes.

Well the world was falling apart that he helped build and nothing he could do about it. Must have been infuriating, especially with a tricky injury that needed just rest really to heal.
And Backlund should be fresh for the WC. A terrible stretch the last 2 months of the year when he was needed the most. Stats down from last year for goals and assists nd he signed a new contract in there too..

That's kind of curious. Maybe they are focusing on younger guys?

Good. I want Gio at his very best for next season, no need to attend the WHC.
Also....snubbed? I mean, if they snuffed him...thats a whole other thing.

Yeah that's weird you would think Gio would be a top choice for team Canada.

If I was to guess I think he was saying he tried to do it all on his own and put to much pressure on himself to get it done.
I appreciate what he is getting at actually.

Gulutzan on trip to Saskatoon: "It's tough. You don't know what to say. You don't know if you'll have an impact but it was good to see some people and talk hockey. Very courageous to see the spirit and the coming together in the tragedy." Said McLellan set the whole trip up.

I'm not so sure how good an idea that is when the league has a smattering of Alex Burrows type players who have no regard for safety or decency (he being one of the most extreme examples of course).
I think especially in the case of precautionary and milder instances, letting other teams know someone has a predisposition to getting another concussion would see a target on their heads from some of the more vile players in the league.
