This is without a doubt the absolute worst season in franchise history. Worse than the young guns.
Haha, I don't know about that. Those were extremely dark days back then. But this season certainly gives those years a run for their money. This is definitely the most disappointing season in a long time, especially considering they were expected to challenge for the division crown this year. Just a complete tire fire of a season for sure.

Watched a movie instead and it sounds like that was a good choice... Flames have got to be officially out of it now right?

Edit: reading through a few posts and it sounds like there was effort at least... Just not a lot of execution... Same old story I guess...

Tkachuk made Backlund a pile of money, for a guy with a new contract and an A, he has been awful without Matt.

But I’ll concede, he has to be better and more disciplined but your boy ferkland was nowhere to be seen tonight except for turning the puck over constantly. At least Bennett is playing with some heart and getting his nose dirty which is more than 75% of this line up can say.
You may be selling high on Bennett right now

What seals this season as one of the worst in a long time is the fact they were not fun to watch at all this year due to GGs system. Especially in the dome if you had the misfortune of going to home games. There was also no power in their power play to get excited about all year.

This is all so reminiscent of the debates on here about backlund about 5 years ago...

He’s 21 years old

Why you all torture yourselves and keep watching this steaming pile? It's gonna be this till the end of the season. Spare your sanity.

Agreed, Smith covered up some brutal defense issues early in the year. Those became more obvious when Smith was out.

I’m sorry, but it’s becoming extremely apparent that Bennett is a bust. He has the hockey IQ of a potato. Toe drags don’t work against professional hockey players and he still Can’t seem to grasp that 4 years in to his NHL career. He can’t physically dominate his opponent like he could in junior, and as a result he is not capable of producing offence because he can’t read the game.

I will fully admit I was happier than a pig in #### when we drafted Bennett, but I’m not a professional scout. It scares me that our scouting staff seems to have completely missed out on his level of hockey IQ.

Bennett busting is one of the key reasons we are where we currently
Are. Monahan is a good player, but he’s a second line Center on a contending team. The Flames thought they were getting their top line Center in Bennett which moves everyone else down improving scoring depth. Instead they got a third line winger who hasn’t improved in 3 seasons.

This “he’s only 21” BS has got to stop. Professional sorts is a young man’s game. If you haven’t accomplished a damn thing in 4 seasons, it’s not very likely all of a sudden something is going to clicks. Bennett’s excuses ran out last year. There’s nothing in his game that would suggest he’s ever going to break out at this point.

In the absence of our top 3 who would I have hoped would pick up the offensive slack? Backlund, or maybe our 'offensively gifted' defense. Nothing there. Feels like Brouwer had the most chances?

As I was walking my dog, I happened upon a house with the flames game on in the window. And I smiled, because at the end of the day, even when you're team's down and out, spending an evening watching some hockey is still a pretty good way to spend an evening.

Bennett is arguably built for the new nhl. He checks hard and skates fast and has skill and heart. It is entirely possible his strongest skills are simply overly constained in the gg system. I think this could be a 80 point guy under a new coach. No joke.

And for the record he was drafted for his hockey iq and hockey skill set not his physical strength.

I can't be mad at any of the players. Their top two scorers out and essentially the same result.

Here's a good article on Gulutzan with Dallas down the stretch:

http://nationalpost.com/sports/hocke...t-in-2-seasons

Quote:
Dallas was in contention late in both his seasons, but faltered down the stretch. He was 64-57-9, including 22-22-4 in the lockout-shortened 2013 season. The Stars controlled their playoff fate with five games remaining each year under Gulutzan, but went 0-9-1 in those 10 games.
Completely different cast of players, leadership, core, whatever other excuse.

If they accomplish just one thing the rest of the season; Don't lose to the greasers on Saturday..... though given the way both teams are playing the last few games, and our depleted lineup, doesn't look encouraging.

Nothing was worse than those final 2-3 Iginla years where we kept trying to "rebuild on the fly' and we were still missing the playoffs and had nothing but old over the hill bums. At least now we have Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuck, Hamilton, Ferland, Jankowski, Bennett, and some good prospects. While this has been a very disappointing year I still see hope moving forward. In those days I saw nothing.
