agree. This team was touted on having one of the elite d corps in the league. Reality is that outside of Gio (who has been great) and Hamilton (who is a key part of our offence), everything else on the backend has been a disappointment. Couple that with a terrible bottom six and you are left with a team hanging onto a playoff hope on the back of vezina caliber goaltending before Smith went down and an all-world first line.

This team hasn't had an identity since GG took over and it won't when he leaves either.

An overall good, but fragile team with poor coach decision making, and a massive steaming pile of oozing dogs*** for special teams.

This team has a Swiss army knife identity, they are alright at playing all styles, but they pick the tool based on the team at hand- speed, possession, toughness, you pick. However, for most heavy duty tasks a Swiss Army knife is not enough.

The unadaptables. Coach's can't adapt, and the players can't adapt.

Team identity or style is definitely a real thing. Craig Custance's book with a bunch of coaches going through their winning games had touched on how these teams came together with a philosophy, whether it came from the players or from the coach.
What the Flames are trying to be? A 4 line team that rolls consistently without breaking and playing as a 5 man unit.
What they actually are? A team who relies on its star players to drag them out of mediocrity and is only as good as their weakest link on any given night. Unfortunately for them, there seems to consistently be a weak link of some sort, whether it's goaltending outside of Smith, PP, specific players etc.

The Flames are a team that takes too many minor penalties and have bad special teams.

Team save percentage is bottom half of the league...Smtih has been very good but the backups not so much.

We're built like the 2012 Coyotes with worse team defence, more mental blunders and more penalties but about the same goal scoring capacity.

Well, if Flames manage to pull their heads out of their behinds, that 2012 Coyotes team did go to the conference final..

In the sense that the Flames have the same goalie and Stone?
I guess Ray Whitney put up some points and they had a couple of good D, but I don’t see such a strong parallel

We have Maloney and Treliving in the office. Whitney was elite and more of a passer ala Johnny. Vrbata pumped in 35 goals quietly with out any fanfare/ little respect ala Monahan every year. Pretty strong two way players in Langkow, Korpikoski and Hanzel ala Backlund and Frolik. Solid backend of offensive dman in Yandle and OEL we also have two good offensive dman in Gio and Hamilton. We both had Stone as well. A young struggling Turris just waiting for a change of scenery to put it all together ala Bennett (Green text). Mike Smith in net standing on his head. I see it for sure. This is why I think with a different coach and more discipline we might squeeze a different result out of the same group.

Identity: too passive. Too little too late. Stifle all creativity. Non belief in system or ability to change said system. Unwilling to make simple and hard decisions in both the coach and GM roles.
More a season summary than a identity but they are one and the same this season.

Not every team can be gritty or underdogs or speedy. Beyond that, there aren't a lot of identities that mean much. Is being a possession team an identity? Having great goaltending? Defensively sound? Being young? Trying really hard?
And what is the identity of the other 30 teams? I don't think you'd be able to come up with one for more than 5-10 teams.
|
I disagree. Another common phrase you hear - ok, maybe a cliche too - is "you know what to expect when xxxx comes to town". What that speaks to is consistency of play and purpose. I'd settle for an identity of "they know what they're doing and they do it consistently".
