BT gets an A-. Probably the best scenario possible without a 2nd or 1st to trade.
No assets lost (other than a 7th rounder)
Stockton re-stocked for long playoff run so our prospects could play a lot in key roles.
We add depth for bottom 6 to raise the compete level and add size and a bit more skill down the stretch.
Shore being an RFA might actually even end up a long term piece as 4C/defensive faceoff specialist/SH specialist.

Not to mention the trust placed in Rittich and Gilles while Smith’s out.

A+
At these market prices the best moves are the ones not made.
1. The Flames got a guy that can conceivably bring the same thing as Evander Kane over the next 20 games for free.
2. The Flames got a legitimate NHL player for a 7th round pick. They now have a month to evaluate him and identify if he can be the 4th line center. Right handed shot to boot.
3. The Flames did not give up a major asset.
4. The Flames did not mess with their defensive chemistry. We have proven over the last three years that new defenders take 30-40 games to get comfortable (Hamilton and Hamonic). They did not mess with the chemistry and in the event of an injury are staked within the system to backfill.
5. If they find out during this run that there are replaceables on defense, then they are in a perfect position at the draft to package a 3-4 defender + for a legitimate right forward.
Great work Tre!!!

I would love to have a list of the TSN/Sportsnet draft day "winners" for the last few years and see if they are even 20% right.

Neutral opinion on the day for me. If prices were too high and the players were just rentals, not much you can do. Pick up a couple wingers in the summer instead if the price is right.

Happy we didn't give up any assets, nothing out there worth the price that was given up.
Think the Flames bolster the line up and I think both players can contribute in a meaningful way. I liked Shore in LA and think he'll be a good fit moving forward and will be re-signed in the off season.
Overall ok, nothing really to get upset about that's for sure.

I think I’m more glad we didn’t burn big assets on a short term rental. The moves themselves were insignificant, but I think they help more than some may think. I give Brad an “A” based on my expectations for him.
Gave up basically nothing, yet ended up adding low risk depth that offers some upside. Always have to give the man credit for leaving no rocks unturned.

Big thumbs up from me. Didn't lose any prospects and These two guys will make a difference (unless Gulutzan screws it up by not playing them)

Improved the team at no cost (don't care about a 7th).
Improved the team. At no cost.
Would have been great to get a scoring winger cheap, but prices were high. Can try again in the summer.

Agree with the general positive sentiment and would add that the vote of confidence given to the team might also have a positive effect.
Looking forward to the final push!

And I suppose the Flames would be winners for giving up a blue chipper in Fox and the rest of their higher picks this/next year for a couple months of Kane?
Yeah I dunno about that. We'll see just how much better Kane will be down this stretch over Stewart, who cost them nothing.

I either wanted us to add another solid centre or RW to push Backlund and/or Frolik down but I’m assuming it would cost an arm and a leg this deadline to get anyone with term (did not want Kane) or to stand pat so I’m alright with this. Chris Stewart is actually someone I always wanted on the team, of course he is not Avalanche era Chris Stewart so we will see how it pans out. Low risk.

Yeah. Treliving admitted he doesn't like big 'sexy' deadline deals cause they don't usually pan out well enough to justify the price. Will be good to remember that next year so our expectations are kept in check.
Seems like the draft is when Tre likes to go looking for a big deal. If scoring ends up being the Flames shortfall in this last stretch then I can definitely see him going out and getting that Hoffman like piece in June.

Good day. Addressed some needs. Didn't pay a big price. The window isn't open yet that we need to start adding deadline deals. BT stayed the course, and that's a good thing.
Don't really give a #### if TSN thinks we lost. All I need to do is look at their cup predictions during the offseason, and that tells me all I need to know about their 'credibility'.
Quote:
EDMONTON - Lord Stanley is coming home: The Oilers will end Canada’s Stanley Cup drought after 25 long years. Connor McDavid matched Sidney Crosby by winning the Hart and Art Ross in his sophomore season. Along with Leon Draisaitl, his version of Evgeni Malkin, McDavid will one-up Crosby by capturing the Cup in his third season – after Crosby fell short in Game 6 against the Red Wings.
|
Any media outlet who had something similar predicted, then goes on to bash a team for not doing enough at the deadline, their 'professional opinion' is pretty much worthless in my eyes.

To build on your post, Treliving said the deadline is where a lot of things start. He mentioned the Hamonic trade started a couple years ago at the deadline. It will be interesting to keep an eye out for Dorian and Treliving at the draft.

TSN said we won the 2009 deadline, so who gives a flying frack what they think. They just want and like the big splashy moves.
This year has been disappointing to me given that the Flames aren't home and cool with a playoff spot and without a 1st or 2nd round pick, but I think the Flames should be patient and not make any rash moves.
Internal growth and maybe the addition of a solid top 6 or 9 winger in the off season, and this team could be poised to take that next step hopefully.
Winnipeg was painfully patient and it looks to have paid off.
Florida wasn't and they have crashed back down to the basement after firing what looks to be a top 3 or 4 coach in the league, and making some questionable player/personnel moves.
