Seems like a lot no? I guess I'm in the minority though as I am not the biggest believer in Backlund, his numbers really don't blow me away and I see Jankowski taking over his spot as a second line centre in a couple years, and being more effective than Backlund. .

Rare to have a guy that loves the city and playing for the Flames as much as Backlund does. The guy bleeds the flaming C!

5.5x4 years = 22 Million
5x5 years = 25 Million
4.3x 6years = 26 Million
Dream scenario:
3.85 x 7 years= 27 Million
I would be fine with any of the above. Combined with the cap increase it makes him an expensive third line centre, but a good one.

He makes 3.575m currently. Paying him 5m, you're only really adding 1.5m to your cap. That's nothing considering what he's brought here for years. Stajan's 3.5m comes off the books this year too, plus the cap is going up. It would be an excellent contract for Backlund.

Because, as evidenced in this thread, Francis is a mouthpiece for player agents.

He better perform the rest of the year; his last three games have looked shaky, and hasn't looked in his best form since Frolik got injured. I hope Treliving acknowledges this, and for Backlund to take it back up a few notches.

It's the same money Tyler Johnson just signed for. With an NTC.

Honestly? If our starting point from Backlund's Camp (assuming Francis isnt pulling this out from where the sun dont shine) then I dont care.
That number or anything near it is perfectly reasonable for Backlund.
If anything I'd consider offering him more per year to get the term down. Backlund is not notoriously durable. But thats insurable within reason so theres that as well.
5X6....okay, a bit long. 5x5? Where do we sign?

It was Kypreos that first reported the Gio talks.

lol you think the last three games matter in the grand scheme of things...its all about market value
He would get some pretty large UFA offers IMO....5x5 is more than fair

Contract talks would explain why he is squeezing his stick (also opponents sticks....!) so much lately

Oh my god, I'd cover myself in honey and jump naked into a 5x5 contract for Backlund.
He'd probably think it was weird, but I know you guys would understand.

He was out two months in 2014 with an abdominal injury, but since then I don't think he has missed more than a game the past three seasons. This was once an issue, but I don't know if it now qualifies him as "not durable."

Yeah they do matter. Especially if that's what we can expect for the remainder of the season.
I am hoping for Backlund to find his game again. But if he can't prove to find it again without Frolik on the wing, I would take that into consideration for contract talks.
No one here knows for sure what the actual discussion are/will be. Your opinion is as good as mine.

There's no evidence Treliving would be that shortsighted. Would not all of last year and all of this season be more relevant than the last three games?
Gaudreau went pointless in 3 games earlier and 2 points in 6 games in the same time frame. Good thing he wasn't in contract talks.

I know for a fact they don't base contracts on a handful of games...its not an opinion
Backlund also has a reputation of being one of the better shutdown centers around the league, him team losing while giving up one goal a game isn't going to hurt that.
