Couldn't tell you, I fast forwarded through most of the recorded game, but that moment stood out to me.
Stajan and another player had a 2 on 1 but the Jets quickly caught up to him.

the vitriol for Stajan just doesn't make sense to me at all.

no he's not fast, not he doesn't have great counting stats, but his underlying numbers are better than the rest of the options on the fourth line.

He's 15th in CF% (Brouwer 20th, Lazar 21st, Versteeg 23rd, Mangiapane 22nd)
He's 8th in shot share (Brouwer 13th, Lazar 17th, Versteeg 22nd, Mangiapane 25th)
He's 14th in high danger scoring chance share (Brouwer 22nd, Lazar 19th, Versteeg 21st, Mangiapane 2nd!)
He's 12th in high danger goal share (Brouwer 18th, Lazar 21st, Versteeg 23rd, Mangiapane 24th)

I get the young guys have upside and you want them in the lineup, but this team isn't getting worked with Matt Stajan on the ice.

With all due respect, Bingo, I hope the Flames never get to the point where ice-time is determined by a ranking of counting stats.

However, I do agree that the vitriol towards Stajan is ridiculous

did you mean underlying stats or counting stats?

I think you meant underlying.

Either way I agree, however to ignore the fact that one of five players seems to be inflicting the least damage to his team with fourth line minutes is something that shouldn't be overlooked.

I meant underlying, in your context, but those are all counting stats, IMHO.

I know everyone likes the new call ups but what exactly has Mangiapane done to play over Stajan?

Stajan has had some great PKs, decent at faceoffs, and even scored a goal recently. Seems like a bit of Shiny new toy talk.

Mangiapane not playing shouldn’t be a surprise, Flames have healthy scratched most of their young players and use it as a learning tool to help them see the game from a different angle away from the ice. Tkachuk was scratched his rookie year even though he didn’t look out place at all and Gaudreau was as well. Mangiapane being a 6th rounder still needs a lot of development and I envision this isn’t the last time he will be healthy scratched this season. Still would like to see him on the second line though! Stajan also has been playing better as of late so I have no issue with this decision.

This is the kind of game I'd expect to inexplicably lose earlier in the season. I'm starting to think we might not be "the same old Flames" and we win this one going away.

Haven't seen the sched, if they're playing up in the toilet bowl then the flames have a decent shot but if the oil are here then yeah, I see them falling back on their idiotic habits against them, and with the way they don't like to try and dictate pace in their own building nearly as much as on the road....god knows why that is.

I think they can handle the Kings. They like to get up for those guys. Specially chucky and gio.

Stajan as of late has been perfectly fine as a 4C. Before he was criticized for killing plays or being too slow, but the healthy scratches and having Mangiapane on his line seems to have revitalized him a bit.

Think we should be OK tonight as long as we come out with some fire. Came out flat against the Jets.

I believe that there is something to be said about having some veteran presence down the stretch of a season. With Frolik out, the Flames essentially have 3 veteran forwards:

Backlund 507GP
Brouwer 733GP
Stajan 971GP

with the next closest being Monahan with 364GP.

This is a very young forward group. Having a veteran player to play with during in game situations is good for a young players development. The kind of mental stability Stajan brings is a good thing for up and comers to learn. There is room for him in his role.

I agree wrong person is sitting here, our forth line should be Eatbread-Hrivik-Lazar. Stajan hustles and is okay in his own zone but offers nothing in the o-zone.
Lurk for 8 years and a crappy January game against Buffalo is what get's you to join for the first time?

I was at that game with my dad. I believe Ales Kotalik scored one of them for the Sabres. That was 14 years ago. Man. Old. (it was my 32nd birthday yesterday so I am going for a close 3-2 win.)

Ask Enoch what happens when you doubt Stajan.

If it worked like that I'd doubt Stajan every night!

Give him a break. He couldn't hold in that fourth line take any longer.

Stajan's fine as the 4C as long as he's got wingers that can skate. Versteeg-Stajan-Brouwer is a disaster of a line, but he works well when he's flanked by guys like Lazar or Hathaway.
