Why waste the assets?
Let No-Good Edmonton draft him, then the Flames can sign him after his 4th year of school.

It's ridiculous how much people overvalue draft picks.
Gaudreau for a 3rd overall who hasn't proven anything? Really?
The same Gaudreau who is sitting 11th in league scoring 1 below McLotto?
Monahan is almost as ridiculous and even Dougie is silly. You don't trade guys who are at or near the top of the league in their position, and in their prime, for a handful of magic beans.

Really? It seems yet to be seen. Brady is a consensus top-5 pick, so he's no slouch.
Honestly that statement sounds homerish.

When the Flames were picking sixth with Tkachuk still on the board what would you have traded that pick for?

Sort of like the Hanson brothers, where, in real life, 2 were actual brothers and one wasn't. Though I think they really were a set of triplets, but one couldn't do the filming.

Well if someone were offering a Gaudreau, I would have sure as #### taken it.
Jacks is right, you're way too high. Gaudreau is a proven top 10 scorer in the league, Brady is probably a 2nd liner in the NHL.

Brodie is more like it. Overpayment, but you're going to have to overpay to pry a top pick away from another team.
The Flames could afford to give up Brodie. The question is, would it fit the team sitting in the 3-5 spot considering the trade? Buffalo? Maybe, because they need D.

If you think Brodie is worth a top five draft pick then I don't know what to say besides please lord trade him if that's the case. Which it isn't.
The bottom line is this question: what do the Flames have that they could trade for a top five draft pick? And there's one answer to that question, Gaudreau (or maybe Tkachuk).

True, but then once that draft pick is taken, people immediately overvalue the prospect. Like, "<insert prospect here> is untouchable!"

Third overalls the last 3 years:
2017 Heiskanen
2016 Dubois
2015 Strome (Dylan)
to think we could have traded Gaudreau for one of these assets.
Fans MASSIVELY overvalue picks

This does not address my question. Which I will reiterate, what do the Flames have that they could trade for a top five pick?
Flames don't have a first or second rounder. Don't have a blue chip prospect. So the list of assets gets pretty short on what it would take to tempt a team to trade that pick. Essentially it would take Gaudreau or maybe Tkachuk. And, laugh, sorry Brodie is not going to cut it. Laughable.

Stepan got #7 last year
D generally hold more value
And Botterill might be desperate. They’ve been bad for too long now, have made many high picks and now Eichel’s $10M deal is about to kick in. They might want to go all in for a partner for Ristolainen

You're not getting a pick that high without overpaying for it.
It's coming from a team that just went through a miserable season and their only solace in that is a high pick and an exciting blue chip prospect joining their organization. They won't part with it for anything less than an overpayment.
So no thanks.

If you are going to trade up to get Tkachuk from the Flames position, might as well go all the way up and trade for Dahlin. Price is going to be hefty either way. Might as well go for broke.
Fact of the matter is top 3 or top 5 picks (depending on the draft class) are franchise changing picks (or at least have the most potential to be). There is a reason why one hasn't been traded in a long time.

I'm a fan of Brady probably mostly due to Matt if I'm honest, but I personally think it's crazy to be talking about moving out a 24 year old top pairing defenceman for an undrafted kid projected to go in the Top 5. 1st or 2nd overall sure, but 5th overall seems risky regardless the reception he gets in the media...
