Calling shenanigans on that. I don't know any city with a university that also gets a week of -50, unless you are from Russia.

Calgary. That's where. It was around 2005 or 2006. We had a week of -40 to -45 and on the ramp it is always 10 degrees colder or 10 degrees hotter in the summer. ####ing brutal. I worked on the ramp for 3 years and that was the last straw. I walked outside and my face mask was iced and my eye lids froze shut. Had to wear goggles.

Yeah 2006. The temperature was -35 and the windchill outside of the airport was -45. -55 on the ramp.

Our pro at our golf course basically makes a living off of reffing in the winter.
I saw him on Monday this week, and he said he's already worked about 50 games. He'd be in his early 30's

Now that I'm out of school and working in my career I'll occasionally play goal for some men's teams around the city. I charge $25 for a game/practice (1 hour)

Haha yep, it's the Uber of food delivery - Pretty decent for the consumer off the backs of suckers willing to work for a ****ty wage.

I've done some tutoring (the $20/hour kind) and it's fun and rewarding. Middle school/high school math and science has a pretty high demand.
Now that I'm actually a certificated teacher I can charge a lot more, but I value my free time quite a bit so I haven't been doing it much lately.

It will screw up your circadium rythm where your body doesn't know when to sleep. I learned the hard way from personal experience. Avoid any job that requires graveyard shifts.

I would assume the temps have wind chill factored in.

I've had a number of second jobs over the years, and it really depends on how much money you need. Some of the things I've done
- Bookkeeping (Locke is better though)
- Reffing sports through Calgary Sports and Social Club (per hour rate is not great, but job is easy and hours fit if you are looking for weekend/evening work)
- Getting paid to fill out surveys (easy work, can do it whenever you want, but pay is low)
The holy grail is to find an online business that crowd sources something. For instance iStock pays inspectors to help ingest imagery. But those gigs are getting tougher to find and you need to have some qualifications. But they are great - you work from home, set your hours and work as much as you want.

I started a company a couple years ago and do work as a family advisor for kids looking to pursue NCAA scholarships primarily in the New England area and for kids out there looking for opportunities to play junior hockey in Western Canada.
I started this more out of personal interest / satisfaction helping families than out of a need for extra income so I have been able to keep client numbers low and be selective about the players I want to work with. It's pretty interesting and rewarding.
I have two consultants who work with us. Probably looking to add a few more in the near future along the lines of client scouts. Would love to be able to offer people here a second job but not financially in the cards at this point. Still at the stage of intern-type positions.

It is kind of awesome. Before I went to law school I coached / managed a spring hockey team where I scouted and put together a group of little kids that out of 14 players, 2 made the NHL, 1 played NCAA Div I and then on to ECHL and 3 others had respectable AJHL and ACAC careers.
I don't pretend to be responsible for all that success but ever since then I have maintained the interest in player development and now am actually doing it as a second business venture and enjoying it.
