I agree. If Hathaway can do it better he sure didn't show it.

For that fourth line agitator/fighter/gritty guy role, you probably need a couple guys to spell each other off anyway. I bet it's hard to be that guy day in and day out.

Very disappointing to see that nobody from the organization seized the opportunity for that 4th line spot, or that #6 spot on D that got filled by another plug.

There are a ton of young forwards in this organization who could not beat this guy out of a job. And while trading Brouwer sounds appealing to be sure, there will be evenless forward depth if that were to happen.

While true, nobody wants to pay 4.5M for a depth player.

For sure and especially not for next 3 years. There is only one way to fix the lack of organizational depth.

I don't mind Glass too much. He played his heart out, and deserves some credit.
However, I bet he doesn't get more than 7 points this year. He's quite a bit worse offensively than consistent 20+ guys like Tom Kostopoulos (from 2003 to 2011). It seems impossible for 7 point players to actually have a positive impact on their team when they provide virtually no offense.

This move looks worse if it's at the expense of Jankowski. Janko deserved to make the team, to a larger extent than Glass.
People are saying that no one seized the opportunity, but that's wrong. Jankowski did.
This sends a pretty bad message. Especially for a team that already has a key weakness in development. The Flames rarely give their prospects chances. And when prospects do get chances, the Flames lack the patience to withstand any of their mistakes.

However, it also shows that the Flames won't reward anyone if no one deserve it. The Flames aren't bluffing when they say that players have to be good enough.
At least Glass is a lot better than Grossman.

Lots of people whine about the "always earned.." phrase whenever there is a decision they don't agree with. Well, Tanner Glass earned a contract. Deal with it. And not just barely. Of all the 4th liners competing for a job in pre-season, he was the best. He deserves a contract.

I thought Glass played good enough to warrant a contract. He delivers punishing hits, but he also seems to have a knack for taking the opposition off their game a bit.

He's not an everyday player but he's a good 13/14 guy.

It sucks that Janko isn't likely going to make the team but would you want him to sit on the bench and play 5-8 minutes a night against other teams tougher guys? No, this is a spot on the team for a guy like Glass, not Janko.

Glass earned this spot and he's there for one specific reason and it's not to put up lots of points

Give me Hathaway or even Hamilton any day over Glass.
Glass outplayed both if them in camp...they all played against some AHL quality players

Yeah the Glass signing is also a shot across the bow of players who thought they could show up to camp and have a spot. I think it will take a bit but Treliving will make room for those that stepped up.

I don't understand all the angst of this (probable) signing. He did well in the pre-season. I think it speaks much more to Hathaway's poor showing. I think by signing Glass it will send a message throughout the organization to not take anything for granted. That was Hathaway's spot, especially after the Flames got rid of Bouma.

Now, if it doesn't work out, I would bet that almost all of his salary (if not completely his entire salary) would be buried in the minors anyway. It is a very low-risk signing. He doesn't even have to play every game - just dress him against the larger teams. I fail to see the huge issue with signing him (or anyone) to a low-dollar contract that can easily be hidden in the AHL.

Signing him will send a great message to all the other 4th line prospects the Flames have in their system. You guys are easily replaced, so you better compete hard for your job during camp, during practices, and especially during games.

We need a new scapegoat anyway. Everything being Brouwer's fault was getting old.
