I get mildly annoyed with celebs (including this hockey player), who aren't experts on the subject, make comments and assertions publicly about said subject.
Then again, he is right and he likely has influence over young fans. So there's no harm in this and some good could come of it.

That's right, celebs are highly unqualified to speak publicly about it.
Leave that up to the professionals like alt right religious politicians, like Michele Bachmann
Quote:
WASHINGTON – Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann told Floridians Sunday that Hurricane Irene and the earthquake felt along much of the East Coast last week were messages from God to warn “politicians” to start heeding divine guidance, which she suggested is being channeled through small government conservatives.
“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’” Bachmann, a third-term Minnesota representative, told a crowd in Sarasota that the St. Petersburg Times estimated contained around 1,000 people.
“Listen to the American people, because the American people are roaring right now,” Bachmann continued. “They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

I hate most celebrity support for or against climate change, but IMO Toew's post is a very reasonable one. In fact, the support he shows seems more along the lines of him saying it's better to be careful than callous.
He hints at the idea it's possible we are not affecting climate catastrophes in his response. He then says it's our responsibility to preserve what we have left (in the environment). Lastly, he mentions a metaphor of someone's body where he implies we should not wait to the last moment to begin doing what is in the best interest of the body.
Ignoring climate catastrophes, we as a society cannot have major cities that are regularly choked up by smog for our own sakes. We cannot let people get exposed to dangerous chemicals etc. A small shuffle or large leap in the way your live may not affect much of anything as part of the large aggregate in comparison to our species as a whole. However, if the overall trend of our species is to educate ourselves about our ecological footprint vs ignoring it, we hopefully should not end up in a situation where we metaphorically paint ourselves in a corner. I think that's the point Toews is making.
I think the point Toews is making is that whether you believe or not in climate change, you should not be ignorant about it nor regarding your ecological foot print. I felt like he was trying to hide his opinion, but his opinion seemed obvious. I could be wrong, but that's what I got out of his response.
IMO, his response also felt like it was carefully crafted to show respect to both opinions and invoke curiosity in the topic rather than be a declaration of his opinion to others.

If anything we recent history has shown that society is rejecting celebrities views on anything political as Hollywood played a role in Trump getting elected. I tend to believe in some cases it hurts more than helps when celebrities speak out on this stuff seeing cynicism appears to be at an all-time high when it comes to stars and their political views.

I don't think having a Nobel prize in physics for semiconductors and superconductors makes one a climate scientist. Or if winning a Nobel makes one's opinion in a completely different field important, I don't think it's reasonable to pick one Nobel prize winner and ignore others.

Why not? Having an account on a hockey message board makes a lot of people experts in all sorts of topics. Bigly experts!

I have contributed links on this subject .... it is revealing as to how little people actually know about the issue .... the policies being pushed , carbon taxes , subsidized wind and solar energy and the transfer of wealth will definitely affect everybody ... do we need to come up with a new source of reliable energy that is cheap and plentiful ? Ya we do .... and like Johnathan says ,educate yourself .....

Links to videos full of inaccuracies doesn't equate to educating one's' self, and conflating the problem and a dislike of some solutions doesn't help either.

I don't even need to "educate myself" or have some expert tell me that some big ol diesel truck spitting out black smoke is really not good for the Earth. Multiply that by a billion trucks, a billion container ships, a billion cars, and a billion power plants that burn coal, and you can likely see for yourself it's likely not good for the environment.
Doesn't it just make intuitive sense to you to pursue energy sources that are renewable and unlimited like solar and wind?
