Plus Treliving can throw in an incentive. He can throw in a guy like Kulak if Vegas takes Brouwer. I don't think it's a stretch if Vegas takes Brouwer
But I don't think you take on 3 years of Brouwer to hit the cap floor. You do that with guys that have 1 or 2 years left. Or your own UFA signings.
Remember how some justified the Mason Raymond signing with the cap floor rationale?

I don't think Kulak is enough of a sweetener. He is a waiver wire type player. I think it costs something in the neighborhood of a 2nd rounder for them to take Brouwer. Or maybe Lazar?

Brouwer is overpaid, but he isn't that bad that it is worth throwing away assets to get rid of him.

LV might take him outright. Or Stajan. Or Bouma. In any event, it won't be a big loss.

I would say it would be better than 50/50 that LV takes Brouwer. It will all depend on if they really like another Flames or Heat player that will be available. They will need some leadership and veteran presence. He's had a tough season for the Flames but a change of scenery could be good for him. As said above Stajan would be a good addiction as he's great in the locker room and a good 4th line center.

I see Iginla going to Vegas. It will be a good chance to get ice time, pad his stats, then get traded to a contender at the deadline.

The expansion always extends careers of bubble players. Iginla will get a contract, I think even players like Wideman will. Wideman is a bubble player now and Vegas will give employment to another 50 or so players. So, Iginla will get another 2 year deal.

I hope this is just a nightmare, but given where he grew up, I could see him going to the Oilers for his swan song. That would be a mega-downer.

Hard to pad your stats on a bad team. He wasn't doing much padding in Colorado.

Then he tarnishes his legacy with the Flames. Sorry but if Iggy ever plays for the Oilers he becomes just some other guy who once played here.

We have to hope Brouwer has a great playoff so that it will entice Vegas.

Much more likely they take Stajan or Chiasson though.

So what was the point of the press conference? To announce the status quo?

It wasn't a press conference, it was Iginla doing an audio conference as a response to media requests for availability. The media wanted to hear if Iggy was retiring or not - it would appear the answer is he's coming back.

And rightfully so!

One more year Iggy! (or two! or ten! Go as long as you can!)

Maybe you can argue Chiasson is a valuable piece, but I doubt that they take Stajan over Brouwer. Vegas gets only one expansion draft, so they need to build their franchise, not select a bunch of nearly UFAs just because of the cap. That's a waste of a one-time, franchise building pick. Chances are Stajan will chase free agency one year after being taken by Vegas.

Brouwer has some term, so if you're going to take advantage of a once in a lifetime franchise building draft you do two things: 1) take young players with term 2) take NHLers with term.

Let's say the cap floor is 54 million next year, that means Vegas has to draft an average of 1.8 million per selection. Otherwise they'll need to sign a whole bunch of UFAs to over inflated salaries, which isnt any better for them than Brouwer. At least Brouwer is only slightly inflated. Brouwer's salary allows Vegas to take on a few ELCs with their other selections and still hit their average of 1.8 million per selection. He also gives them term so they won't waste their pick.

It comes down to opportunity cost. Vegas can take the following players from the Flames, otherwise work out a deal to maximize their value:
-- Brouwer
-- Stajan (1 yr left, highly unlikely)
-- Bouma (1yr left)
-- Shinkaruk (on the fringe, but still some value)
-- Poirer (M.I.A, highly unlikely)
-- Kulak (on the fringe, but still some value)
-- Culkin (very unlikely chance of being an NHLer)
-- Wotherspoon (very unlikely chance of being an NHLer)
-- Vey (waste of a pick)
-- F. Hamilton (waste of a pick)
-- McCollum (waste of a pick)

The rest of either UFAs or protected. That's a pretty ####ty list and not a lot to work with. It basically comes down to Kulak, Shinkaruk or Brouwer. So if you have a chance to eat some salary so that you can take some solid ELCs from Carolina and Chicago, I bet you take Brouwer, especially if Treliving offers you Kulak in order to save Shinkaruk. That's what McPhee will look to do when trying to bleed water from a stone.

Bring home Jarome.

Bring him home, and let's win a Cup together. We'll right the wrongs of 2004, and this generation of fans can experience true sports magic that we'll be telling to our grandkids.

Bring home Jarome.

Edmonton fans don't exactly prefer Andy Moog to Grant Fuhr. They seem to be okay with the fact that Fuhr stumbled out his last days in Calgary.

5 years afterwards, Flames fans would only be really bitter if he won a cup in Edmonton in the time he was there. That's highly unlikely to happen in Iginla's remaining playing days.

I can't pretend to know McPhee's strategy, but it was up to me I would look at free agency generically, not specifically as to what players are available. Chances are any players he might target will either be re-signed, or he has a 1/28 chance of signing them. So he probably looks more towards there being an abundance of depth centres, not so much "I want Jarome Iginla because I need RWers".

I would imagine he keeps his expansion list fairly separate. Once he's done the expansion draft, it's at that point he can look at which free agents to target.

I don't think Iggy wants to come back to Calgary....at all.i don't think he's particularly motivated by nostalgia, just money and a chance to win.

Iggy is the best Flame of all time and games leader. It would be like if Wayne came and played for the Flames.
