On PTS Wednesday
McCown: "So at point Mr.King can we expect you to commence your Katz like tour where upon you court the favour of other markets because you're threatening to move your team?"
...some mixed rambling about Katz...
King: "...Our ownership group who are wonderful people are not going to have their reputations tarnished, they're not going to be ridiculed here...there would be no threat to move, we'd just move, and it would be over..."
To be fair he did then say "I am trying my best to make sure that day never comes."

No they wouldn't.. They would pay a $500 million relocation fee instead of a new building?? haha ok Ken.

Amazing how the sentiment has turned on Calgary Puck lately. You'd think CP being likely the most hardcore Flames fans would be the biggest supporters of an arena but the general theme seems to be"Ken King/the Flames screwed it up"

It's hard to support something that we have no details on. I support the idea of getting a new arena, but that's all I can do until the Flame and city start to get some sort of a framework in place.

They had better move the Hitmen, Stampeders, and Roughnecks too then. If they move the Flames because they don't get enough public money towards a new arena, you can bet there will be a huge public backlash and calls for a boycott against other teams the CSEC owns.

It is the emptiest of all threats.
They can't move, as has been mentioned the NHL has to approve it. Also, they have to pay a fee.
Finally all their other teams would be ####ed without the Flames subsidizing them (pure conjecture on my part).

They've botched their proposal so badly, and they are now in the process of completely misreading public appetite for giving millions to rich owners while most Flames fans shine up resumes or have friends and family who are.
Plus, fans are now getting a (close) first hand experience with Edmonton's new arena on what the actual benefits are to the average fan, verses the downsides, and yes there are downsides, the most important being that it's way more expensive to get into that smaller bathroom line.
Now you add in cringe worthy relocation threads straight out of the American stadium playbook, and quite frankly they can go **** themselves.

to be fair, there is support for a new arena here
The underlying caveat has always been "How much"... And its at that point that there's a pretty wide range of opinions...
Like any city building project, I am not opposed to some public funds going into it... The reality is that there are plenty of public projects that happen that only benefit small segments of the wider city population - that shouldn't automatically eliminate the arena from any public money...
West LRT - never used it
Ring Road - been on it maybe 3 times
Green Line - probably the same as West LRT
The Rec Centers - never used them and won't be unless i move
Airport tunnel... might have benefited a few times (if the benefit is saving 10 min on a drive) on route to the airport
And despite rarely/never using the above projects, I was/am in favor of all of them...I mean i get it - i could go there if I wanted to since they are public, while a new arena would cost me the price of adminssion...
I think most of CP falls into the "how much" category... and I for one, would rather have Nenshi take a hardline rather than bend over backwards to shovel money for a huge stadium project (ie like CalgaryNext) whose price tag isn't well defined... Although the Flame Organizations contributes a lot to the community, its still a private enterprise

Support is still here as you can see via the polls. It's just that the people against CalgaryNEXT are louder and like to repeat their opinion over and over. If you really look it's a group of the same people saying the same things over and over again in every thread related to the topic so I got bored and no rarely post in those threads these days. Really there's only to many ways you can say you are for or against the project without heavily recycling the same reasoning over and over.

i'd take any comments section with a grain of salt... usually its the angriest people that post comments to articles...
and this includes me, since i post comments as a reaction to articles...

And if you want CalgaryNEXT and Calgary Olympics 2026, you basically have to root for Nenshi and the NDP. Fun!

I'm not for or against the Olympics. I can live without it but if the city wants it I'm fine as I think it would be great for my kids to experience it. I'm pretty grounded in that despite Nenshi's antics and overrated body of work I'm not going to vote in a clown just to oust him so I don't necessarily have a rooting interest there unless there's a legitimate candidate running against him. The NDP could hand over CalgaryNEXT on a silver platter and I still wouldn't vote for them.

Looking at the poll latest poll of how much you would spend to keep the flames only 13% would go up to the 500 million. So in a community of flames fans, the ones who will benefit most from a new arena only 13% would support the best case scenario for CalgaryNext.
So there is essentially no support as CalgaryNext is currently proposed once you put all of them numbers on the table.

That is incorrect as that's an "arena" poll not a CalgaryNEXT poll. The fieldhouse is not involved in the thread poll. I even stated in it that I would go up to $500 only for CalgaryNEXT and not for just the arena. It wasn't as well thought out a poll as it could have been (sorry Jiri).

I'd really be curious to see a present day poll on Calgarynext, but with very simple wording, like ErikEstrada I'd like to see the actual support for the full scope of the project.
Just...
Do you support the Calgarynext project as presented, including financing?
Do you not support the Calgarynext project as presented, including financing?
I suspect that project would have record low public approval right now, compared to even a few months ago. Mods, could you add it to this thread?

The CalgaryNEXT thread shows nearly 75% of people on this site are straight up against CalgaryNEXT or undecided. Only 25% support, which on a Flames site is rather atrocious.
