I have noticed that when you remove the games where a goalie lets in a lot of goals, their save percentage improves.
I agree with you. Elliott has made some big saves lately but the numbers don't lie.

So if the games where Elliot played bad didn't count, he'd be doing great!
This team needs an elite goalie and until they get one, they won't be good enough to master. I'd be on board with getting Bishop to see if he worth a contract next year. If not, grauber or mrazeck and hope they turn out.

not that keen on Bishop considering what the ask was the first time around...
additionally, he was rumored to be seeking 8 M/yr... even if that has dropped, i still see an ask of 6.5-7
not sure how we fit that contract in, even with Wideman and Engelland coming off the books? I am sure calgary would like to keep engelland but at 2M +/- a year.
not sure if a neuvirth would solve our issues, but i'd be interested in that kind of trade over Bishop

Elliott's play over the last while is making it tough for the Flames to move him.

I think the Flames are definitely interested in a Number 1 goalie in the 24-27-ish range.
Ideally. Probably won't happen.
Kipper was a home-run. 27.

That's not good goaltending, that's bottom of the barrel goaltending. I've posted this stat before, but for goalies have that started at least 20 games, Elliott ranks 44/47 in save percentage. Elliott is not good.
|
My problem with this assessment is that he's been shelled in many starts and secondly, this is the same narrative for 3 of the last 4 goalies with almost the same team in front of them. At some point you have to stop blaming the goal tending for everything.

Yeah, that's the thing. I was looking at the thread with the heat charts last night, and the Flames this year and last have been putrid at protecting the front of the net. You give up that many chances right on the doorstep, no goalie is going to look good.
Frankly, I think the best upgrade in goal is simply getting Wideman off the defence corps. There are three more games before the deadline. I'm keen to see how much difference Stone makes defensively. Perhaps a move in goal won't be necessary.

I think Treliving obviously brought in both goaltenders as stop-gaps. Two journeymen.
Both on one year contracts.
He's hunting bigger game.

Yup, I completely agree with this. He's biding time until he hits the young stud goalie. See for e.g. the rumours a year or 2 ago that he was after Murray. Keep working until you hit pay dirt...

Isn't next season the season they crack down on the size of goalie equipment?
Bishop would worry me with a huge contract and smaller pads.

If the question is how he is playing now, and the majority of his bad games were early in the season, yes, you don't count the early games.
Bishop is very good, but I don't think he's elite. And he's injury prone.
